What Is Growth Mindset?

The concept of growth mindset, coined by Stanford University psychologist Carol Dweck, is the idea that humans can develop their talents and abilities through a positive belief system and hard work. Dweck’s work shows that parents and educators can foster a growth mindset in young children through positivity and motivation. With the right mindset, elementary school students are better able to gain new skills, achieve long-term goals, and build self-esteem. Though Dweck’s methods focused on fostering a growth mindset in children, people of any age can benefit from having a growth mindset.

What Is a Fixed Mindset?

A person with a fixed mindset believes that abilities are predetermined and that certain people are naturally more talented or skilled than others. Moreover, a person with a false growth mindset is someone who believes in the concept of growth mindset but does not put the methods to practice in their own abilities.

Growth Mindset vs. Fixed Mindset: What’s the Difference?

A person with a growth mindset sees their experience differently than a person with a fixed mindset.

  • Attitude toward failure: A person with a growth mindset sees a setback as an opportunity for improvement. A person with a fixed mindset views failure as permanent.
  • Ability to receive feedback: An individual with a growth mindset receives criticism as a concrete way to improve, whereas a person with a fixed mindset takes critical feedback personally.
  • Willingness to take risks: A person with a growth mindset approaches risks as opportunities. Someone with a fixed mindset is risk-averse and often does not complete challenging tasks.

4 Benefits of Growth Mindset

A person with a growth mindset is highly motivated and able to view challenges as opportunities. Benefits of developing a growth mindset include:

  1. 1. Satisfaction: Developing new skills can boost happiness. A person with a growth mindset may feel more satisfied in their personal life and at work.
  2. 2. Relationship building: A person with a growth mindset is successful at working collaboratively with others.
  3. 3. Problem-solving: An individual with a growth mindset is more likely to overcome discouragement after a setback and approach problems in a new way.
  4. 4. Self-esteem: Developing a growth mindset is a way to build self-esteem and a sense of accomplishment.

How to Develop a Growth Mindset

A growth mindset can help build moral character and benefit your personal and professional development. Here are some good strategies to implement at home and at the office:

  • Be curious to learn new things. Individuals with a willingness to learn and grow are highly adaptable and open to new challenges.
  • Be open to learning strategies. Know that people learn in different ways, so try out different approaches to learning.
  • Grow beyond your job description. Get out of your comfort zone and expand your capabilities outside your required tasks at work. This can increase your job satisfaction and may even add value to your workplace.
  • Value process over end result. Place emphasis on learning and growth more than measured outcomes.
  • Practice process praise. Be sure to recognize and celebrate any progress made along the way.
  • Embrace failure. Take risks and know that mistakes are an essential part of the learning process.
  • Reflect on your learning journey. Be sure to take the time to reflect on setbacks and analyze ways for improvement.
