[MUSIC PLAYING] ELAINE WELTEROTH: Now, before we go any further in this class, I want to talk about something that honestly might be the most important lesson of this entire MasterClass. While you're chasing your dreams, you have to make time to take care of yourself. Burnout is real. You cannot build a sustainable multipronged business without building out a self-care strategy and action plan that works to support you in all of your endeavors. And I know that you have that hustle mentality. And we've all come from this grind culture that tells us to go, go, go, go, go. But hear me when I say this. It is so important to have work-life balance. [MUSIC PLAYING] So the reality is when you're early on in the work of establishing yourself and carving out that sweet spot, that-- that zone of genius at the intersection of all the spaces that you want to be playing in, you're going to be working hard. You're going to be working long hours. You're going to say yes more than you're saying no. When I left my corporate job, I made a pact with myself because I knew I didn't want to build a company that I didn't want to work for. So while I said yes more than I said no, I told myself we are only saying yes to projects when you can find it in you to say hell yes, hell yes. This is exactly how I want to be spending my time. This is paying more than my bills. This is giving me a sense of value in those spaces that I want to be operating in. This is giving me energy. So basically, the deal I made with myself is I don't just want to say yes or no. I want to say hell yes or nah. And only you know what the criteria is for arriving at a hell yes for you. But write it down and get clear on what actually fuels you, what actually energizes you, and what you actually enjoy doing. And try to spend more of your time doing the projects that are really fulfilling. Early on in my career, when I first landed in New York City, and I was ready to hustle and make all my dreams come true, somebody asked me what my career mantra is. And I remember like googling it and figuring out like, what am I going to say my career mantra is? And I found this quote from freaking "Crocodile Dundee." Don't ask me why I decided to pick a quote from "Crocodile Dundee." But it said, "Bite off more than you can chew, and chew it as fast as you can." And I remember thinking like that's it. Just grind it out. Just do all the things. Just keep saying yes. Prove your value. And eventually, I burned myself out and working like that took a toll on my body, on my mental health, and on my relationships. And I was experiencing burnout without even knowing it. I was experiencing anxiety. But I had no idea because I was so focused on building my career that I was neglecting other parts of my self-development. And the thing is if you want to build a sustainable business, you have to be a sustainable person. And it's so important that you invest in all the par...
