[MUSIC PLAYING] - Now it's time to talk about how to build infrastructure around your ideas. If you have an unconventional, creative entrepreneurial business that you're building, you're going to need an unconventional support system. The thing to remember is you cannot do it alone. If you have big dreams, you're going to need a team to help you accomplish those goals. And it's going to take time to find the right combination of people and the right structure to support the dreams and the visions that only you have. In this chapter, I'm going to help you build a dream team that is customized for you and your specific needs, whether you're doing the Hollywood thing or starting up your own business. What's really important as somebody who is a game changer, a change agent, and a disruptor is that you find people who want to play the game your way. As the boss of your own life, you get to decide what your company values are and what your company culture will be. And please believe that that company culture starts with you. You are employee number one of your enterprise. Before you have the people on the payroll, it would be wise to sit down and really map out what your core values are. Really take time to set those intentions and visualize the right environment for you to thrive. As the manager or the boss of your life, you're also a curator of energy. What are the energies you want to be around? What energy isn't healthy for you? I have a no asshole policy. I also have a no yes man policy. I want to have people around me who challenge me, who can respectfully critique my work, and help strengthen my talents and help me be better and make my work even better and connect more deeply with the community. That's really, really important for me. What is important to you? What are those deal breakers? What are those non-negotiables? Write them down and make sure that you're prioritizing them as you're starting to build out your team. When you're first starting out, you really should hire incrementally and not all at once because the truth is, you're still learning what kind of support you're actually going to need. All right, so real talk, when I left my corporate job and ventured into the entertainment space and had entrepreneurial pursuits that ranged from writing books to producing television to hosting unscripted television and beyond, I was told that I was going to need the Hollywood treatment, agents across every division, a lawyer, a business manager, a manager. And each one of them we're going to take a percentage of my earnings. I tried it, and it wasn't for me. Have you ever heard somebody reference their agent or their manager or their lawyer as some kind of flex? I have to tell you like it's laughable to me because once you actually have a manager and an agent and a lawyer, you realize that each and every one of these entities has the hand in your pocket. They're all getting percentages of what you're takin...
