[MUSIC PLAYING] - This is a game situation. Inbound, full court. 31 pickup. How to win with 2:48 left. Let's go. The motion offense for a winning team is not just reading the situation. It is also reading your people. When I talk about reading people, it's not like I'm putting someone under a microscope and judging them. Look, people talk to you in many ways. There's verbal communication. There's body language. There's facial expressions. Like when you read them, do you read them when they're alone doing something alone? Reading them when they're with you? Do you take the time to read how they are when they're interacting with other people? In my profession, I needed to look at all those things to find out who you are and where I knew who you are without you telling me every day what's on your mind, what's going on, why you aren't enthusiastic today, why you were enthusiastic yesterday. Well, the most interesting thing on Earth is a human being. And the most important thing on Earth is a human being. What I try to do is I try to learn more about people, not who you were but who you are. For me, the guys I coached I was always older than. Always. And in my last year, I'm 75. And they're 18 and 19. Wow, that's a big difference. And so, how was I able to communicate with them? How did I make my reads? How did I stay current in my language with them without ever sacrificing the core values of our program? That to me is incredibly important in order to be a good leader. [MUSIC PLAYING] Connecting with the audience you have the privilege to talk to or interact with, it's paramount. It's not what you know, it's what you're able to verbalize and teach, or extend to your group and what they get from you. So it really kind of starts with your attitude and how you look. Stay current with your-- especially your shoe game. And your sweats aren't as baggy as they were 10 years. You're up to date. You have a presence. Every once in a while, my guys be at practice. And guys would say, Coach, your shoes are hot. And I said, what? He said, no, they're good. That means they're good. OK, I got you. I gotcha. And sometimes after I spoke to my team, and I'd tell a story. I'd ask my staff, do you think they knew who I was talking about? Do they still remember? Coach, yeah they do. And if they said they did not, after they stretch, I bring it together. By the way, you knuckleheads, you don't know who this guy is. But he is the guy now that's like this guy is that guy. Oh, he was that good. I said, yeah, so let's go. And to interact like that you have to be on your toes and stay current with listening to their music where all of a sudden you can say a line from a song or reference a certain artist, or actor, or a movie. And I follow all my guys on Twitter and Instagram. They can't follow me. So I stay up to date with them. And if I see them putting out something good, I might text them, send them a Bitmoji, or something, do a li...
