- Performance with purpose, if internalized-- and it was, in our company-- flows from the top, is embraced up and down the chain, and takes life, and is enriched, down where every country meets its consumers and farmers and suppliers and government officials. When we did performance with purpose at PepsiCo, it was a broad corporate direction. For it to be implemented and for it to really come to life, it had to be broken out and transmitted to the divisions, to the regions, to individual countries, into programs that they could implement. And then, it had to have a two-way dialogue-- what corporate would send to them as what our expectations were from, let's say, Latin America, versus what a Peru or a Chile or a Brazil would come back and say we'd like to do to fulfill the Latin American goals, but go a step further. So I'll give you an example. We have a big stack business in Peru. And we've always done well with potato chips, corn chips in Peru, and sourced it from local farmers. Performance with purpose is about supporting local farmers as part of our citizenship in that community. It's part of our environmental sustainability. And one of the things we discovered was, in the Andes mountains in Peru, there was a potato grown, a purple potato. And the farmers there had no market for that purple potato. And the supply was very uneven. And so our team came back and said, what if we launched a purple potato chip, whenever those purple potatoes are available? Call it Papas Andinas, chips made from the Andes. And if it's available, we'll use the purple potatoes. If we don't have it, we won't. But it'll give those farmers a livelihood. Purpose goals were as important as the financial goals. Because having a different rigor on purpose goals versus financial goals basically meant we didn't care about purpose goals. Metrics for success in the potato in the Andes-- did it deliver revenue? Did it deliver some profits? Did it enable livelihoods for those farmers over time? Did the Peruvian government view us positively? And with those metrics, I would say this was a big success for PepsiCo and for these farmers in the Andes. Some are what I call tangible metrics and impact-- our shareholder value. Others are tangible metrics, but they impact reputation, which in turn gives us a license to operate in that society. There's innovation that's waiting to be adopted and make a difference in so many dimensions of society. So don't hold back your innovative juices. Anything you see, any problem you see, go think of a solution. And performance with purpose gave you the license to do that. The best example that I can give you is in Aurangabad in India, in Maharashtra state. We had a plant, and a Pepsi plant that was using a lot of water. Aurangabad was a water-distressed area. In some ways, not too dissimilar to the situation I faced as a young girl in Madras. And the team said, look, we're going to d...
