[MUSIC PLAYING] - So right now, we're going to bring you into our creative orbit and showcase for you our decision-making process using a medley of digital technology and the old school way of laying out work plans. And to help me achieve this, I'm going to introduce my trusty sidekick here, my senior designer, Heather. And we are working on a very exciting project for a client in Massachusetts. They have a historic home. And why don't you share with the class, Heather, why we came to this particular layout for this large, gigantic living room? - Right. So one of the things we had to determine was the purpose of this room. How the client would like to use it is hosting several dinner parties. They intend to have a lot of friends over. And so with the shape of this room and the size, we were able to put together several seating arrangements throughout the space to be very conducive to different groups of people having a more intimate conversation and a more public one in the other end of the room. - Right, exactly. The centerpiece, obviously, is this round 55-inch diameter table, which we thought it would be a great serving station, if you will, for coffee station hors d'oeuvres, dessert, maybe a little drinky drink. HEATHER: Drinks. - Right, got to have the drinky drink, right? And that way, parties from both ends of the room can kind of congregate here and then go back to their respective spaces and hang out. So the idea, now, is to figure out between us what we want this space to do. Now, we're working with a color palette of honey, black, cream, gold, and the idea is to basically, you know, punctuate this scheme through this very large room. So let's start with the placement of the space, right? We have three sections, if you will. You have the west end, the central section here, and then the east end of the room with different groupings. So we chose to go with two sofas at opposite ends of the room for balance and also for, again, more seating opportunities. And we have chairs facing each other in both layouts of the room, two different types of coffee tables also specified. Now the idea is how we're going to attribute the color scheme that we've selected for these pieces of furniture. - One of the first things we have to do after we've picked out our color palettes is we need to measure the space and draw it up and put furniture in the space to see what we need. Where is this fabric going? Is it going on a chair or sofa? Is it a pillow? Is it a window treatment? You know, we have to find places to put it. So getting the room drawn and then finding actual pieces of furniture and to spec and putting it into the floor plans is the next step. - Right. [MUSIC PLAYING] So far we've shown you how you can use mood boards and color boards to really launch the creative genesis of your project. This particular client's project's already gone through those stages. So now our next respons...
