What Is Eyebrow Tinting?

Brow tinting is a beauty treatment that creates the appearance of longer and fuller eyebrows with semi-permanent dye. Unlike makeup products that darken brows, like brow gel or a brow pencil, eyebrow tinting can last more than a month. Brow experts offer eyebrow tinting services at salons, but you can also tint your eyebrows at home with an eyebrow tinting kit.

How to Tint Eyebrows

You can tint your eyebrows using eyebrow tinting kits from a makeup store or drugstore. Follow the step-by-step guide below for how to tint natural brow hairs:

  1. 1. Choose a color. Choose an eyebrow color two or three shades darker than your natural brows for a natural look.
  2. 2. Prep your face. Wash your eyebrows with a cleanser to remove makeup. Apply petroleum jelly to the area around your eyebrows to prevent the dye from staining your skin.
  3. 3. Mix the tint. Mix the tint according to the eyebrow dye kit instructions. Eyebrow tint kits usually include eyebrow pigment and the developer. Mix the pigment and developer until paste forms. You can mix the dye using a wooden stick or the back end of the application brush.
  4. 4. Apply the tint. You will need a spoolie brush and a slanted makeup brush to apply the tint. Apply the brow dye with the makeup brush from the front end of your eyebrow to the thin end of the brow. Then run the spoolie brush over your brows to ensure the tint is coating every hair. Do one brow at a time.
  5. 5. Let the dye process. Wait five to ten minutes for the eyebrow tint to dye your eyebrows. Processing times will vary according to the type of dye and tint kit, so be sure to check the instructions.
  6. 6. Remove the tint. Wet a cotton pad or cotton swab, then use it to remove the tint from your eyebrows. You can use a bit of shampoo to ease the removal process. Gently clean off the tint. Avoid rubbing too hard to prevent eyebrow hairs from falling out.
  7. 7. Adjust the color. If the color is too light after it dries, you can apply a darker shade. If the brow is too dark, you can make the color fade by washing your brows with shampoo two or three times.

Eyebrow tinting kits use dyes that are safe to apply to your skin and are not harmful if they accidentally get in your eyes. If this occurs, rinse your eyes immediately.

4 Tips for Tinting Your Eyebrows

Consider these tips to ease the process of tinting your eyebrows:

  1. 1. Do a color test. You can test different dye colors by applying the dye to a paper towel, letting it dry, and holding the swatch next to your natural eyebrows.
  2. 2. Shape your brows. Before dyeing your brows, it is helpful to shape your eyebrows and remove any errant hairs using a tweezer or brow shaping scissors.
  3. 3. Test the tinting solution. If you have sensitive skin, do a patch test of the eyebrow dye on your wrist. See how your skin reacts over a forty-eight-hour period before tinting your brows.
  4. 4. Touch up your brows. The longevity of eyebrow tint varies depending on the brand and how often you wash your face with soap. Generally, eyebrow tints last four to six weeks. You can touch up your eyebrows as necessary with more brow dye.
