[00:00:05.29] WOMAN: She's already done had hers. [00:00:07.70] MAN: Ladies and gentlemen, RuPaul Charles. [00:00:12.51] RUPAUL: As a kid, I promised myself I would never restrict myself with colors and music and laughter and joy. [00:00:20.63] Oh! [00:00:22.07] So when I found drag, I found something that people responded to, and it was a way for me to laugh at life and not take it all too seriously. [00:00:34.28] Everybody say hello. [00:00:35.33] CROWD: Hello. [00:00:36.88] RUPAUL: And that's what drag is. Drag reminds us that these bodies we live in, the titles we give ourselves, the identities we give ourselves are really just temporary. They're not the deepest level of who you are. [00:00:51.11] In this MasterClass, I'm going to teach you how to be your powerful self. Trust me, this is what you were born to do. [00:01:00.63] [MUSIC PLAYING] [00:01:01.09] (SINGING) Cover girl, put the bass in your walk. Head to toe, let your whole body talk. [00:01:08.58] Cover girl, put the bass in your walk. Head to toe, let your whole body talk. [00:01:15.47] - For years I've said you're born naked and the rest is drag, meaning everything you put on after you get out of the shower or take your bath or step out of the house is, in essence, a construct. It's something that was built. [00:01:32.01] My glamazon drag is obviously I'm in drag because it's clearly a man, and I'm wearing traditionally feminine, glamorous clothing, so it's pretty obvious. For the everyday person, they too are in drag, but it's not as obvious. So it's a way of putting focus to the vision you put forth. [00:01:59.52] It was very clear early on that people responded to me in drag, any form of drag. I felt that they saw me as out of focus before I was in drag. And when I got in drag people went, oh, there you are. And it's a way of connecting my own frequency, my own energy to what other people see. [00:02:21.78] Now, of course, on the inside I always felt just like me. I always feel like me. You know, as a kid, I grew up in a house with all women, and, you know, I'd play with my sister's clothes, my clothes. I loved all the textures. And that experience I never wanted to lose. [00:02:39.15] My sisters Renetta and Renae, they taught me everything. They guided me into the pop culture world, and they told me about Motown stars and fashion stars. They taught me about magic. [00:02:53.25] In fact, I think I was probably five years old. My sister Renetta, she took some cookies and put them in a brown paper bag and then took a sheet or a blanket and said, come with me. And we went out to the backyard of our house, and she spread out the blanket, and we sat down and we ate the cookies. And she said, Ru-- she used to call me RuRu-- this is a picnic. And I said, oh, wow. OK. [00:03:20.14] Now to anyone else it was just a blanket and some cookies out in the backyard. But adding the idea of this was something special, this was a picnic, taught me about magic and how you approac...
