[00:00:00.00] [MUSIC PLAYING] [00:00:13.33] - What are you afraid of? Why is speaking from the heart, why do some people find it a frightening thing or a negative thing? And I hope you don't. And I hope that I can share with you. And I hope that I've shared with you how I've gone about speaking and sharing from my heart, and wanting you and encouraging you, and hoping that you'll do the same. [00:00:40.81] Why? Why do you want to share? Why-- are you trying to get something out of it? Is there something in it for you? There is. But that should not be your motivation. [00:00:52.12] So if you answer those questions for yourself, then I really truly believe it will come flowing, that once you know the intent behind the reason of your intentions, once you know that, the rest of it will fall into place. And I'm not asking you to trust me. I'm asking you to trust yourself on that. [00:01:10.74] [MUSIC PLAYING] [00:01:18.25] Vulnerability is being strong, not weak. When you allow yourself to be vulnerable, you're showing a strength, not a weakness. And people see that. And people will thank you for that. [00:01:35.21] 2005. It's August. I've only been the anchor with Charlie and Diane for a few short months and have all these doubts that are in my mind. Hurricane Katrina comes along. Hits my beloved Mississippi Gulf Coast. [00:01:49.57] My mother was unable to evacuate. My father had passed away less than a year before. My mother was too ill to evacuate. So my sister Dorothy and her daughter stayed with my mother at her home in Biloxi. [00:02:00.86] So the next morning, you know, I had lost contact with them overnight, which is common. Growing up from the Mississippi Gulf Coast, I'm used to hurricanes and what happens. And so I wasn't surprised that I lost contact with them. That happens. [00:02:14.10] Go on the air that morning with Charlie and Diane in New York. We wrap up. I go to a luncheon that day. And it's at a place that I can't receive phone calls, because the luncheon is down-- the restaurant happens to be in a basement and there's no communication. [00:02:29.94] A couple of hours later I come out from the lunch and check my messages. And it's from the office saying, hey, it looks like the storm is worse than we thought. We'd like for you to go down on the coast. Meanwhile, I had been trying frantically to get in touch with my family. Was unable to. [00:02:48.56] So I remember going, yeah, I'll go. So I hop on the plane with the crew. We land in Lafayette, Louisiana. That's as close as we can get because of the storm damage, which is hundreds of miles away from the coast. So we land the night after Katrina. [00:03:03.29] Our plan is to be on the air the next morning. We get in the van. We have our big satellite truck. We take off for the Mississippi Gulf Coast. This is my home. So I know where we're going. And I know what's supposed to be, places that is no longer there because Katrina has wiped it out. But no one else knows. And t...
