[MUSIC PLAYING] - In this lesson, we're going to talk about color. And I always say living without color is like living without love. And I truly believe that. Color is so powerful. And it evokes so many emotions. If somebody wants something that's bright and clean-- white. And the many shades of white is perfect for them. If somebody wants something that's uplifting and happy, I love using a citron and the many different shades of yellow. And if someone wants a color that really is sexy and sensual, I recommend a beautiful scarlet red. [MUSIC PLAYING] Bringing color into your home in an affordable way is through paint. And whether you're painting all your walls or just one wall, it truly makes a statement. So my first apartment, I moved to LA. And it was an historic building. And I really wanted to put my personal voice and spin on this new dwelling of mine. And I was looking around architecturally at what was there that I could be inspired by. And I had at the top of my windows was a stained glass window. And there was this citron color. And I was always just-- I loved it. It just felt really happy, and it made me feel good. I went and got about 20 quarts of yellow. And I wanted to experiment. This is my laboratory. This is a place that I can let my hair down and-- and just do whatever I want. I ended up at this incredible statement. And the example of my apartment, how color unifies a space-- it truly did. It actually made the space feel larger. So I painted the entire living room, and then I went and experimented in the adjacent room. Got the quarts of paint and put that on and then painted that room once I decided. So I actually did it in slow installments. And it really helped with my process. [MUSIC PLAYING] I have a lot of friends and I have clients who'll come to me and say, Kelly, I just don't know what color. I want color into my home. And I have no idea what colors to even look at. A great example is to go into your closet. What you look good in in terms of fashion, you're going to feel good in. Somebody that has a lot of white or a lot of black-- perhaps they like things that are more pared down and simple. And they're into minimalism. There could be somebody who loves a beautiful shade of powder blue. If you have a closet that has many different colors, maybe take a few of the articles of clothing and actually put them in a room and drape it over a chair and see how it feels in there. Looking at these colors are going to tell you a lot about what you want to surround yourself in. [MUSIC PLAYING] We were working on a residential project in Soho in New York City. And it was a loft. And the client wanted all white walls. Like they wanted to feel very crisp and clean and taking advantage of the light, the natural light. But they did request that they wanted some color in the room. They also requested that they had a one-of-a-kind piece, something that signified what they needed functionality wise ...
