Cocktail historian David Wondrich notes that an early form of this bare-bones drink appeared in 1937 as the B.I.F (in tribute to the British Industries Fair). In the years since, it has spawned many variations—like the Clavo Ahumado, which swaps mezcal in for Scotch.
