What Is an ISTJ Personality Type?
ISTJ (introversion-sensing-thinking-judging) is one of the most common personality types in the general population on the Myers–Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). The first United States president, George Washington, may have been an ISTJ. Also known as the Logistician, ISTJs tend to be reserved, practical, and orderly. They embrace traditions and tend to be strict rule-followers. They are detail-oriented and prefer a highly organized home and workspace. They have a strong sense of duty, making them dependable through and through.
ISTJ Cognitive Functions
The dominant cognitive function of this personality profile is Introverted Sensing—meaning that ISTJs tend to be highly perceptive and rely heavily on their personal experiences to inform their decisions. The auxiliary cognitive function is Extraverted Thinking, meaning they tend to make decisions based on logic rather than emotions. The tertiary cognitive function is Introverted Feeling, meaning they make judgments based on a unique set of values. The inferior cognitive function of ISTJs (the weakest part of their personality) is Extraverted Intuition—this part of their personality that enjoys new experiences and adds balance to an otherwise rigid personality type.

ISTJs in Relationships
ISTJs prefer to have a few deep relationships rather than many casual connections. They like to spend time alone or with a small group of close friends. They are deeply devoted to their family and closest friends. Regarding romantic relationships, ISTJs are dependable partners who desire stable, long-term relationships. Although they may experience deep emotions, ISTJs can struggle to show their true feelings. They tend to be more reserved and need more time before fully opening up to a romantic partner. In dating and friendships, ISTJs tend to listen more than they talk and prefer low-key activities over spontaneous adventures.
ISTJs at Work
ISTJs prefer work environments that offer stability, security, and consistency. They thrive in roles that reward a keen eye for detail and strict adherence to rules or traditions. ISTJs fit perfectly in jobs that require high levels of objectivity and logic. Some popular ISTJ career choices include accountant, auditor, data analyst, software engineer, law enforcement officer, judge, and lawyer.
What Is the Myers–Briggs Type Indicator?
The Myers–Briggs Type Indicator is a tool for identifying a person’s personality type. Isabel Briggs Myers and her mother, Catherine Briggs, developed the personality test inspired by the work of Swiss psychoanalyst Carl Jung. Based on your answers to a questionnaire, you get assigned one of sixteen personality types.
According to the MBTI, four cognitive functions form a hierarchy: thinking, sensing, feeling, and intuition. Each cognitive function is either introverted or extroverted. The combination of these functions is what determines a person’s personality type.
The 16 Personality Types
The sixteen MBTI types include ISTJ, ISFJ, INTJ, INFJ, ISTP, INTP, INFP, ISFP, ESTJ, ENTJ, ENTP, ENFJ, ENFP, ESFP, ESTP, and ESFJ.
