Why Use a Lip Scrub?
In addition to lip balm, which can treat dry lips, a lip scrub is an important addition to your lip care routine. During the fall and winter months, dealing with dry, cracked lips can be painful. A lip exfoliator can leave your lips soft and renewed. While moisturizers and lip balms hydrate and protect your lips against the wind, a lip scrub gets deeper by removing dirt and dead skin cells.
Many dry skin treatments require special creams or specific beauty products, but you can make an exfoliating lip scrub at home, where you can control the ingredients. A DIY lip scrub has a short prep time and is easy to integrate into your regular beauty routine.
How To Properly Exfoliate Lips
To slough off dryness, create a simple hydrating DIY lip scrub and take some time to massage it onto clean, dry lips in a circular motion. Then, wash the scrub off your lips and pat them dry with a towel. After exfoliation, put on some lip balm to moisturize.
DIY sugar scrubs can last three to six months, and you can store your lip scrub in a tightly sealed jar or container. Lip scrubs can be great for other parts of a skincare routine. Use a sugar scrub on other spots on your body that are prone to dryness, like elbows or the bottoms of your feet.
How To Make a Homemade Lip Scrub
A homemade lip scrub usually has an exfoliant and a nourishing ingredient. Exfoliants in a DIY lips scrub should be something natural and gentle, like brown sugar, honey, petroleum jelly, shea butter, or vitamin E. However, white sugar will be too harsh on your lips.
Adding a few drops of peppermint essential oil or almond oil to your ingredients list will also help invigorate your lips during the scrub process.
4 Basic DIY Lip Scrub Recipes
Since lip scrubs have so few ingredients, you can test a few before you find your favorite. The general rule of thumb is to have half exfoliant and half nourishing agent, but you can play around with adding raw honey and essential oils as well. Here are a few recipes based on popular ingredients in natural lip scrubs:
- 1. Coconut oil lip scrub: This is one of the most popular ingredients for moisturizing with a lip scrub. The recipe is 1 tablespoon of coconut oil, 1 tablespoon of honey, and 2 tablespoons of brown sugar. After these ingredients are thoroughly mixed in a small bowl, add in half a teaspoon of warm water.
- 2. Coffee lip scrub: Mix together one tablespoon of ground coffee and one tablespoon of honey for an invigorating and exfoliating lip scrub. Other spices also work well in lip scrubs and provide a different flavor.
- 3. Brown sugar lip scrub: One tablespoon of honey and one tablespoon of brown sugar is all you need for this sugar scrub. This recipe is great for adding in a few drops of essential oils such as lavender, peppermint, or citrus.
- 4. Olive oil lip scrub: Since olive oil is so moisturizing, it works with ingredients like cinnamon and will balance out the spice. For this recipe, combine half a tablespoon of olive oil, half a tablespoon of raw honey, and half a teaspoon of cinnamon powder.
DIY lip scrubs are easy to make at home and fun to test. They will leave your lips soft and plump, so you no longer have to worry about chapped lips and dry skin.
