What Is Matte Lipstick?

Matte lipstick is a highly pigmented lip product with a shine-free, velvety finish. Unlike lip gloss or lip stain, this type of lipstick is not glossy, giving the lips a dramatic, full coverage look that is still understated enough to wear during the day.

Compared to other high-gloss lip cosmetics, a matte finish stays on your lips for longer. This makeup product requires minimal touch-ups and will rarely smudge beyond your lip line, making it a great long-wear option for photos and glam events.

How to Apply Matte Lipstick

Follow these simple application steps if you want to wear matte lipstick:

  1. 1. Exfoliate and moisturize. Matte lipstick clings to dead skin and dry lips, so create a smooth canvas by exfoliating and nourishing your lips before matte lipstick application. Buy a brown sugar scrub or make your own DIY lip scrub to mitigate dryness before applying your lip color. Follow your exfoliant with hydrating lip balm to moisturize your lips, which will ensure your lipstick looks smooth. As your lip balm absorbs, apply the rest of your makeup to allow for adequate moisturizing time.
  2. 2. Prime and line. Apply lip primer or concealer to your lips to prevent your lip color from looking uneven. To outline the shape of your lips, use a lip liner that matches your lipstick shade. (You can also go one shade darker.) This will prevent your lipstick color from feathering outside of your lip line. If you have a cupid’s bow or want to create the illusion of one, make an “X” shape with your lip pencil at the top of your lip, which you can use as a guide to applying your color symmetrically to this tricky area. If you don’t have a cupid’s bow or don’t want to highlight it, outline slightly above your lip.
  3. 3. Apply your lipstick. Apply the matte lip color on your bottom lip first. If you’re using a matte liquid lipstick, apply it with the applicator. Press your lips together to gradually spread the color to your upper lip, being careful not to extend beyond the lip line. However, if you’re applying a liquid matte lipstick, do not press your lips together as it can become streaky or patchy. Instead, apply to your bottom lip and top lip, and keep your mouth still until it dries. You can dab your pout with a tissue to remove any excess product—which will increase your lip color’s staying power—before it sets.
  4. 4. Clean up the edges. Use makeup remover to clean any smudged lipstick. After you remove the excess lip color, dab concealer on a lip brush to line the outside of your lips, creating a seamless, sharp edge.
  5. 5. Finish the look. Wear the matte look as is, or apply a clear gloss or a small amount of highlighter to the center of your lips for extra shine. Deepen the color and add shine by applying a matching lip gloss over your matte lipstick.
