What Is Lip Oil?
Lip oil is a beauty product you apply to your lips for moisturizing benefits and a high-shine finish. While thinner and more liquidy than other lip products like lip balm or lip gloss, the best lip oils add intense hydration to your pout for a healthy, moisturized look. You can find lip oils at the drugstore or beauty supply store or make your own at home with natural ingredients, like jojoba seed oil.
How to Use Lip Oil
Apply hydrating lip oil to clean lips using a rollerball applicator or your fingertip—the result should be an even, glossy lip. Reapply lip treatment oil every few hours or as needed to combat dryness.
How to Make Lip Oil in 7 Steps
Make a DIY lip oil at home with a few natural ingredients. Follow these steps:
- 1. Decide on your carrier oil. Lip oils require a carrier oil. You can make homemade lip oil with many nourishing oils; try sweet almond oil, avocado oil, sunflower seed oil, rosehip oil, coconut oil, jojoba oil, or olive oil.
- 2. Combine with a thickening agent. Mix your carrier oil with equal parts of a thickening agent like vegetable glycerin or honey.
- 3. Add additional moisturizing ingredients (optional). If you have dry lip skin or chapped or flaking lips, add more nourishing ingredients and antioxidants like vitamin C or vitamin E oil.
- 4. Add essential oils or pigment (optional). Some makeup artists like to add a few drops of peppermint or lavender essential oil for a pleasant scent or gentle plumping effect. You can also add a pigment, such as beetroot powder, for a tint or hint of color. Avoid these ingredients if you have sensitive lip skin or allergies, and consult a dermatologist before applying new products to your lips.
- 5. Combine ingredients. Combine your ingredients in your container. A mini roller bottle allows for easy glide-on application.
- 6. Shake well. Shake your container well until all your ingredients are thoroughly combined and the mixture looks homogenous.
- 7. Store in a cool, dry place. Homemade lip oil will last for several months—even without added preservatives—as long as you keep the lip oil away from moisture.
