[MUSIC PLAYING] - My dad was always a big believer that everything is teachable, that anybody can learn. And you shouldn't be so closed-minded that you can't learn every day. Listen, it's OK to dream. But I think the reality is, let's make our goals attainable one step at a time. Dreams are different, and it's OK. I think we should all have dreams. Of course I dreamt of playing in the NHL. And of course I dreamed of being a Detroit Red Wing. That didn't happen, but I had that dream. But my goals were pretty basic. It was, OK, I want to play junior hockey. I want to play in the best league in Canada as soon as possible, which at the time, I didn't really know a lot about high school hockey. But I knew that probably, that wasn't the route I wanted to go. Or to play Junior B hockey, which was basically kids of 18, 19, and 20. And when you're 14 years old and you have these sort of choices, it's very difficult. So I went and watched the junior B team practice. The coach told me to come out and practice one day. He'd never seen me play. It's 19, 20-year-old kids, and I was 5'7" and 126 pounds. I remember thinking, wow, I'm not sure I can play here. Practiced one day. The coach told me that I could play in that league. He would help me. He'd help make me a better player. My dad and I sat down and discussed it, and I decided that I didn't want to go back home, that it was the right thing to do. And that decision, that single decision that day, changed my life forever. My dad never got worried or nervous about me getting injured or hurt because, as he always said, from the time you were three years old, you played against kids who were bigger and stronger than you. And all the way back to the beginning of all the things he taught me as a youngster, I was now going to utilize even more going forward because now I'm on my own, so to speak. And now I have to make sure I eat properly the night before. You have to get your rest. You have to be prepared. You have to practice hard, all the things that my dad had taught me. Now, if I wanted to live my dream and have my goals realized, now I had to put them into play and put them into use. And so that's what happened. [MUSIC PLAYING] My goal was to make the Sault St. Marie Greyhounds and make that team. And nothing was going to stand in my way. I was going to work and do whatever I had to do to prepare to be ready on the first day of training camp. So when I got on the ice, they would say, we didn't know he was this good. I wanted to be ready for them to say that. And I did. I accomplished that. Fortunately for me, I had two really good years in Junior B hockey. I was lucky enough to be drafted by Sault St. Marie Greyhounds. Moved to Sault St. Marie, lived with another family for a year. But all the things that my dad had taught me got me ready to be drafted by Sault St. Marie not only playing for fun and enjoyment, now you're playing in front of 9,000, 10,000 people. ...
