What Are Blinds?

Blinds are a type of window covering composed of hard slats which can be adjusted to control the amount of light that enters a dwelling. These window coverings are installed at the top of the window frame in a hidden box called the headrail, and feature vanes, or slats, made out of faux or real wood, plastic, vinyl, or metal, which you can pull up and down or side-to-side, with or without a cord, to open and close.

There are many reasons to install blinds in your home: they help control the amount of light that floods in from the sun and artificial light sources and give residents some control over their privacy. Another benefit of blinds, particularly those made from opaque blackout fabric, is that they can help keep a room cool in the summer or warmer in the winter.

5 Types of Blinds

There are many window treatments available on the market, including drapery, shades, shutters, plantation shutters, and blinds. Window blinds, alone, come in various styles, each with its own pros and cons. If you are considering blinds, here are some of the most popular choices:

  1. 1. Venetian blinds: Venetian blinds are the most traditional type of blinds, dating back to eighteenth-century Venice. These blinds consist of horizontal slats held together by two or more cords that allow you to raise, lower, and tilt the slats for light control. They’re functional and easily customizable to any design and budget, though the pull cords may be a safety concern for those with small children or pets.
  2. 2. Vertical blinds: Vertical blinds, a popular alternative to the traditional Venetian blind, feature slats that run up and down instead of left to right. They are especially popular choices for large windows or sliding glass doors because they open from side to side instead of top-down. This type of blind is ideal for patio doors because you can partially close them and maintain access to the door. Vertical blinds also block out more light than horizontal shades, increasing their energy efficiency and privacy capabilities, which may be useful for homes with a big window overlooking a busy street. However, the clattering noise the dangling slats make when they collide may be an issue for noise-sensitive residents.
  3. 3. Mini blinds: Mini blinds are similar to Venetian blinds in function and appearance, except their slats are half the width of standard slats. A common fixture in households and office spaces, these blinds open from the bottom up with a pull cord and feature a plastic pole that allows you to adjust the degree of the slats’ opening. These blinds are typically made out of aluminum, making them affordable, light-weight, and easy to clean. An even smaller version of slats are called micro blinds or micro mini blinds.
  4. 4. Panel track blinds: Panel track blinds are a modern and stylish alternative to standard vertical blinds. These versatile window treatments hang from a track installed in the window frame and stack on top of each other to open side to side, similar to vertical blinds. They are ideal covers for sliding doors or large windows.
  5. 5. Smart blinds: You can control these cordless blinds using an app on your smartphone or remote control. Perhaps the most advanced and luxurious blinds on the market, these motorized window coverings are a popular choice for hard-to-reach windows, like skylights, or for homeowners who dislike the sometimes messy appearance of cords. They can also increase your home’s security as you can control the blinds when you are away from home, but they can also be expensive. If you want smart blinds, you’ll need to choose a power source—from solar powered to battery-powered—and hire a professional for installation.

4 Factors to Consider When Choosing Blinds

With so many types of blinds to choose from, it can be difficult to determine which best suits your needs. Here are some essential factors to consider when choosing blinds for your home:

  1. 1. Room function: First, consider the functionality, qualities, and design of the room where you are installing blinds. If you are putting blinds in a large, airy living room with windows overlooking the backyard, you might opt for a style that allows natural light to seep in. On the other hand, if you’re choosing blinds for a bedroom in an apartment overlooking a big city street, you may want a style that maximizes complete privacy and room darkening, like blackout blinds that filter out light. If you work in a home office with a large skylight, consider buying a smart solar shade that protects you from harmful UV rays and automatically adjusts throughout the day to block the sun as it moves.
  2. 2. Budget: Your budget will be a major determining factor in the type of blinds you buy for your home. Blinds come in various styles and colors, which affect their price, ease of installation, and durability. For example, mini blinds are cost-effective, but you may need to replace or repair them sooner than other more durable styles, like real wooden blinds.
  3. 3. Aesthetic: The interior design of your home may influence the type of blinds you purchase. Venetian blinds complement a traditional home, whereas panel track or smart blinds are common choices for contemporary or modern homes. The different styles of blinds all come in different colors and materials, from faux wood to pleated honeycomb, so whatever you choose can be customized to match your home décor.
  4. 4. Health and safety: Health and safety concerns play a major role in the buying process for blinds. If you have dust allergies, choose blinds that are easy to clean, like aluminum mini blinds, or minimize dust accumulation, like panel track blinds. If you have small children or animals in your house, consider cordless blinds, such as smart blinds or panel track blinds.

What Are the Differences Between Blinds and Shades?

Blinds and shades are two distinct types of window treatments that provide varying degrees of light filtering and privacy. Although the words are frequently used interchangeably, there is an important distinction between the two window coverings. Blinds are made out of hard material, whereas window shades are made out of fabric material, and their individual slats allow you to tilt or raise them up or down to adjust for how much sunlight enters a room.

Since fabric shades are composed of a soft material, they can only be raised up and down, which means they offer less light control than blinds. Roman shades, cellular shades, and roller shades are some of the most common types of shades.
