Krzywy Domek Guide: The History and Style of Krzywy Domek

Krzywy Domek, translated as “The Crooked House,” is a commercial building in Sopot, Poland, known for its unique architectural style. The shape of the building creates the optical illusion of warping. A popular tourist attraction, Krzywy Domek is part of the Rezydent shopping center.

Polish architects Szotynscy & Zaleski began designing Krzywy Domek in 2001. Construction began in January 2003 and was completed within a year. In 2004, Krzywy Domek opened to the public. Krzywy Domek received several awards and honors, earning a spot as one of the seven wonders of the Tricity area, which includes the neighboring cities Gdańsk and Gdynia.

Architects Szotynscy & Zaleski drew inspiration from the fairytale illustrations of Polish illustrator Jan Marcin Szancer as well as the surreal drawings of Swedish artist Per Dahlberg. The abstract architectural style of Krzywy Domek shares similarities with the Dancing House in Prague and Antoni Gaudí’s Catalan modernism.

1. 1. Shape: Krzywy Domek mimics the visual effect of a funhouse mirror, distorting the shape of a traditional building. The unique shape of the building creates the appearance of drooping, melting, and warping.
2. 2. Exterior: Krzywy Domek matches some of the stylistic characteristics of its neighboring buildings with sandstone-framed windows and a colorful stained glass entrance. The blue-green enamel shingles on the roof of the building resemble dragon scales, reminiscent of Antoni Gaudí’s Casa Batlló in Barcelona.
3. 3. Interior: At roughly 4,000 square meters, the inside of Krzywy Domek features offices, coffee shops, nightclubs, and a wall of fame where Polish celebrities sign their names upon visiting the iconic building.
