How to Hang Curtains Without Drilling: 3 Easy Methods

A curtain rod is a horizontal pole or piece of hardware from which you hang curtains or drapery in your home after installation.

There are various types of curtain rods and drapery options to fit different home improvement budgets while still enhancing the home décor. For example, some curtain designs might include grommet holes near the top of the curtain for the rod’s placement. Other types of drapes might attach to the rod using curtain hooks or curtain rings.

Hanging curtains without drilling holes is sometimes a personal choice; other times, the situation necessitates it. Here are a few scenarios in which hanging a curtain rod without the use of nails, drywall anchors, or screws could be your only option:

• Inadequate space around the window frame: If your hardware would go past the window trim or frame on either side of the window, you might need to mount the curtain rod inside the window frame instead. In some instances, you can hang the curtain rod from the ceiling just above the top of the window. For other challenging window orientations or large living room windows where window treatments are impractical, your best strategy for privacy or light control might be DIY curtains.
• Installation of lightweight curtains: If you are not installing heavy curtains, blackout curtains, or thick decorative curtains, you might be able to secure your drapery with a more passive option. • Inability to drill curtain rod brackets: If you’re a renter, even small holes in drywall to install curtains or tiebacks could elicit an angry response from your landlord. In buildings that use shiplap and plaster instead of traditional drywall, it might be simpler to hang a ceiling curtain from ceiling hooks.

1. 1. Secure the hardware with adhesive hooks. Adhesive hooks or adhesive strips are versatile hanging tools you can purchase in various sizes and strengths. Hook strengths range between four and twenty pounds of holding strength per hook. Renters can also benefit from hanging curtains and other items with adhesive hooks because removal is simple and unlikely to damage your wall surface. Simply pull on the bottom of the adhesive strip and the elastic substance will disengage from the surface.
   
2. 2. Use magnetic curtain rods. This option is only viable if you are hanging something on a metal door or window frame. These metal frames must contain ferrous metals with iron to initiate the magnetic connection. Manufacturers design most magnetic rods for lightweight curtains; however, you can pay a premium for stronger magnets to hang heavy drapes.

You can use these same principles to hang separate curtain panels for windows. Use a tape measure to find the length of the curtain and place the tension rod at the proper height. Ensure the rod is plumb and level to create perpendicular contact with the trim. Twist to extend the rod, and each end will apply pressure to the interior of the window frame without damaging it. The tension rod design can typically hold twenty to forty pounds of hanging weight.
