What Are Curtain Rods?
A curtain rod is a piece of hardware that's used for hanging window treatments. Window treatments typically allow some natural light to fill your space while offering varying degrees of privacy and room-darkening. Curtain rods come in a variety of colors and materials, making it easy to find the right rod for your living room, dining room, bedroom, or home office.
How to Hang Curtain Rods
Before starting this DIY project, familiarize yourself with this step-by-step guide to hanging curtains.
- 1. Gather your tools. To install a curtain rod, you will need a tape measure, stud finder, level, screwdriver, power drill, drill bit, screws, wall anchors, pencil, curtain rod, and curtain rod brackets.
- 2. Measure your window. Measure the width of your window. If you want to hang drapery that will only cover your window, add two to five inches to the width of the window frame. If you want your curtains to hang to the sides of the window (the best method for maximizing natural light), add eight to fifteen inches to your measurement.
- 3. Choose your curtain. When it comes to choosing the right curtain panel size, the general guidance is to choose curtain panels that, when added together, equal twice the width of the window. Generally, the curtain rod should be placed four inches above the window trim, so that added length should be considered as well. Take note, however, that placing the rod higher can make the room feel larger, and you’ll need longer curtains for that purpose. Floor-length curtains typically come in standard measurements ranging from eighty-four to 120 inches. If you choose a curtain with grommets, keep in mind that the grommet is usually set about an inch below the top of the curtain panel.
- 4. Mark the wall. Measure and mark the height and width of where you'd like to place your outer brackets. Hold your curtain rod up to these markers and use your level to make sure it's straight. Adjust accordingly, marking the screw holes with a pencil. Particularly long curtain rods may need an additional bracket in the middle for added support. If this is the case, use your measuring tape to find the middle of your curtain rod and mark another screw hole with your pencil.
- 5. Use your stud finder. Use a stud finder to determine if your drill holes will hit a stud. If not, drill pilot holes and apply drywall anchors.
- 6. Install your curtain rod. Using a power drill or screwdriver, fasten your curtain rod brackets to the wall. Place the curtain rod onto the brackets.
- 7. Apply the finishing touches. Now that your brackets are securely fastened to the wall, feed your curtains onto the rod. Tighten down the set screw to lock the curtain rod in place. Finally, attach the finials to the ends of the curtain rod.
