What Is Deep-Throating?

Deep-throating is an oral sex technique that involves taking the entire penis into the mouth until it reaches the back of the throat. Deep-throating can trigger the pharyngeal reflex (also known as the gag reflex), a physical contraction that prevents choking and causes the giver to gag or even regurgitate. This technique’s success often relies on the receiver’s ability to accept the full girth of their partner’s penis into their mouth without gagging or regurgitation (unless the receiver enjoys these common kinks). There are various ways to desensitize this reflex, like deep breathing or routine manual stimulation, making the process more enjoyable for those who are not comfortable with the bodily reactions that result from deep-throating.

How to Deep-Throat

If it’s your first time deep-throating, take control of the pace. While regular blowjobs can be more casual in approach, deep-throating requires precision to be satisfying for the receiver and safe for the giver.

  1. 1. Apply lubrication. Before you begin the process, apply lube to your partner’s penis to avoid friction, which can be painful for the receiver and the giver.
  2. 2. Find an aligned position. Placing the mouth and throat in an aligned position can help relax the throat muscles, making it easier for the penis to explore the depths of your throat. Lie back on a bed, with your head hanging slightly off the edge of the bed, and then ask your partner to lean over you, bringing the penis level with the mouth.
  3. 3. Let the receiver control the session. If you’re new to deep-throating, giving the receiver the power to control the process will ensure their comfort as they get familiar with the action.
  4. 4. Begin the blowjob. Use your hands to gently pull your partner into you as you guide their penis into your mouth. Start by performing a back and forth motion before taking their penis deeper into your mouth.
  5. 5. Find a rhythm. Once you’re comfortably able to hold their penis in the back of your throat, allow your partner to thrust gently. Breathe in and out through your nose, timing it with the retractions; if you need to, or are having trouble breathing, take breaks.
