What Is an Eyelash Curler?
An eyelash curler is a clamping tool that makeup artists use to crimp eyelashes into a temporary upward curl. There are two types of eyelash curlers: mechanical eyelash curlers and heated eyelash curlers, which incorporate heat for a stronger curl.
Are Eyelash Curlers Safe?
Eyelash curlers are safe if you use them properly, but misuse can result in pain or torn-out eyelashes. Opt for a curler-free approach if you want to avoid using an eyelash curler to give natural lashes a curl.
How to Curl Eyelashes Without a Curler: 4 Techniques
If you want to give your straight lashes a lash lift without a lash curler, here are four beauty tips and tools to help you curl eyelashes:
- 1. Curl with eye makeup or gel. A common curler-free technique to curl eyelashes is to shape lashes with your drugstore makeup or a gentle skincare gel like aloe vera. Products like mascara (especially a waxy formula found in volumizing mascara or waterproof mascara) or a natural gel (like aloe vera) solidify your lash shape and hold a light curl. Apply mascara or gel and gently press your lashes up and hold for a few seconds to curl your lashes.
- 2. Get an eyelash perm. For a non-DIY approach to eyelash curling without a curler, consider visiting a beauty salon, where a professional can perform an eyelash perm to give your eyelashes a longer-lasting curl hold. Eyelash perms last up to three months.
- 3. Try a warm spoon. To try this method, place a metal spoon in a cup of warm water and let it sit for at least three minutes, or warm it up with a blow dryer. To stay safe, make sure the spoon’s temperature is warm rather than hot. Then, dry the spoon on a clean towel and place the edge of the spoon above your lashes on the lash line so that the bowl of the spoon is upside down and facing away from your face. Place your thumb underneath it so your lashes are between the spoon and your thumb. Gently grasp your lashes between the spoon edge and your thumb and pull gently, repeating along your lash line until all of your lashes curl upward. For extra hold, seal with a coat of mascara.
- 4. Use a small brush. You can use a small brush—like a clean mascara spoolie (also called a mascara wand) or an unused toothbrush—for a gentle DIY lash curl. For best results, warm the brush in hot water, dry it on a clean towel, then use the bristles on the underside base of your lashes, brushing and pressing up to create an upward curl. For extra hold, seal with a waxy mascara.
