What Is Eyelash Serum?
Eyelash serum is a beauty product for eyelashes that purportedly makes natural lashes thicker and longer. Eyelash serum is a popular alternative to eyelash extensions. Common ingredients in lash growth serums include hyaluronic acid, panthenol, biotin (vitamin B7), pumpkin seed extract, peptides, and castor oil. These ingredients can stimulate hair growth and moisturize and hydrate the lashes to prevent breakage. Using eyelash serum can extend the telogen or resting phase of your eyelashes’ growth cycle.
How to Apply Eyelash Serum
Follow this step-by-step guide for using over-the-counter eyelash serum:
- 1. Start with skincare. Wash your face with a cleanser to remove dirt, oil, or makeup. Makeup removal is essential—your face has to be clean for the eyelash serum to adhere to your lash line. Remove contact lenses from your eyes.
- 2. Apply the eyelash serum. Eyelash serum usually comes with an applicator brush or a spoolie applicator, similar to a mascara wand. You can also use a cotton swab to apply the serum. If using a brush applicator, apply the serum in a single thin layer to your upper lash line at the root of your eyelashes, starting from the inner corner of your eye and going to the outer corner. If using a spoolie, brush the serum over your eyelashes as you would mascara.
- 3. Repeat on the other eye. Repeat the application process on the upper lash line of your other eye.
The eye area is the most sensitive area on the face. If you notice any redness or irritation after applying eyelash serum, stop using the serum.
5 Tips for Applying Eyelash Serum
When applying eyelash serum, consider these tips and tricks:
- 1. Apply the eyelash serum according to instructions. Applying excess serum will not make your eyelashes grow faster. Apply the eyelash serum according to the package instructions—generally once or twice a day, in a single layer.
- 2. Avoid your lower lash line. Use eyelash serum only on your upper lash line. If you apply the product to your bottom lash line, the product can block ducts or get in your eyes and can cause irritation.
- 3. Let the serum dry. If you apply the eyelash serum in the morning, wait until the product dries—about five minutes—before applying makeup products. Eye makeup products—eyeliner in particular—will not adhere to your lash line if it is wet.
- 4. Use continually for results. Eyelash serums do not work overnight. It can take weeks, even months, to notice results.
- 5. Try a prescription serum. Despite the promises on many eyelash serum bottles, over-the-counter eyelash growth serums are not regulated, so there are no studies proving serum works. There is an FDA-approved formula that stimulates hair follicles and promotes eyelash growth. This requires a prescription from a dermatologist because the active ingredient, bimatoprost, can cause side effects such as irritation and permanent eye color change.
