- I'm often asked, what is that advice that I give to my leadership team as well as members of my family and my two young adult children? And I sum it up in one word, and usually it's go. Go forward, make change happen, go boldly, go big. There's not an opportunity for you to stand still. You have to go. You have to choose a path. And once you choose that path, you have to live it through the fullest and see it all the way through. And that's the advice that I give, and I actually try to live that myself. The person that graduated from Spelman College many years ago left that environment feeling fearless, feeling nurtured, feeling very emboldened to address the challenges as an African-American female, but then translating that into true leadership, and taking all of my lived experiences and bringing them forth as I addressed really complex issues. My journey began as a scientific research technician with Kimberly-Clark, which molded my critical thinking and allowed me to rise to leadership positions in that company. But I wanted to learn more about the business world, and the company allowed me to grow both personally and professionally. That led me down the path to take on leadership roles at Walmart, at Sam's Club, Starbucks, and today at Walgreens Boots Alliance. Really critical to your personal leadership is having this innovative mindset. And being that person in leadership, you're going to be faced with everything from a crisis, a tough solution to solve, a transformation at a company, results that need to be turned around. But when you really take a step back from all of those opportunities, it's about your personal leadership. At some point, we all face fears, and over the years, I've become fearless at really facing some of the biggest problems and challenges at pretty major corporations. What has really helped me was to self-develop and take the time to really understand the facts, study my business, understand the industry, so that when I am challenged, I have a fact base. I have knowledge and understanding of that industry that actually makes me feel fearless as I approach some of the most difficult situations because I understand. And I try to learn. This is back to learning agility and making sure that we stay on top of our learning process. I'd like to summarize what we've been discussing in this class, and it's been about leadership and innovation. It's been about those crossroads that we'll all face as we grow as leaders, and it's been about managing leadership during a crisis. And it's also been about how do we grow ourselves and grow the companies and the entities that we're interested in? And how do we apply processes and tools against those initiatives? And there's a few things that we should take away from this discussion. One is that we have to be lifelong learners. We have to be agile. One thing we know for sure is change is going to happen.
