What would you do if you had more time? Would you solve a complex problem? Write your first novel? Perform in a concert? Train for a marathon? Would you put together that business strategy that unlocks a new layer of growth? Would you just get on top of all of the little things that have been eating away at your attention and making you stressed out? My philosophy of slow productivity can help change the way you work. --that are checking them every few minutes. This is self-report data. I have a lot of different roles in my life. I'm a teacher, I write books, I'm a journalist, I'm a podcaster, and I have three boys, all under the age of 14. And yet, I rarely work past 5:00 PM. It is the ideas from slow productivity that make this possible. It's built on three pillars. Number one, do fewer things, number two, work at a natural pace, and number three, obsess over quality. We're going to dig deep into each of these pillars, I'm going to explain the underlying principles, and then give you step-by-step advice about how to implement them in your job and life. A recent study reported in Forbes found that 66% of people surveyed were feeling burnt out, and that's an all-time high. Here's why you might feel constantly busy, but like you're not really getting anything important done. You spend a lot of your day reacting to messages. This lack of focus gives you feelings of anxiety or overload, which makes it even harder to make progress on anything else. This is going to thwart any attempts you have to relax or recharge. So now, all of these dreams you have of doing stuff that's important, these big ideas that you want to get done, this will all now seem impossible. This class will help you escape the trap of busyness and help you instead produce the type of results that are not only going to get you noticed, but it's going to make your work more satisfying and more sustainable. It's going to help you be freed from the trap of pseudo productivity, and learn what it really means to produce valuable stuff with your brain. We're going to study some of the great knowledge workers from history, people who have produced things that are so important that we remember their name to this day. We're also going to study regular people in modern knowledge work jobs, figure out how are they actually implementing these type of grand ideas in their practical environment. Keep in mind that not every step will work for every type of job, but there are ways to adapt this advice and apply it to how you approach your work. This isn't a class about protesting work or being less ambitious. It's instead about a better way to work. Everyone can benefit from slowing down, and I can show you how to do it. I'm Cal Newport, and this is MasterClass. I noticed an interesting phenomenon that began during the pandemic, which was that my readers and my podcast listeners were getting upset with the term "productivity." They didn't want to hear "be more productive" because they heard "be mor...
