CAROL DWECK: You could think your ability was just this fixed trait. You have a certain amount of intelligence, talent. That's it. We call that a fixed mindset. Or you could believe that your ability was something you could develop and grow. And this view, we call a growth mindset. DAVID YEAGER: What you believe shapes who you become. Growth mindset is very simply the belief that change is possible. And it's the opposite of the fixed mindset, which is the idea that our qualities and our characteristics can never be changed. CAROL DWECK: Growth mindset has a series of beliefs that keep you on your path and keep you enjoying the process, not just the outcome. It's essential because it helps us learn new skills, realize our potential, recover from setbacks. And it helps us to excel in our work and personal lives. I'm Carol Dweck, professor of psychology at Stanford and author of Mindset-- the New Psychology of Success. It was like a bomb had gone off in social science when Carol Dweck published Mindset. CAROL DWECK: My research has revealed how a simple belief about yourself can guide so many parts of your life. Since I wrote that book, I've expanded my own thinking, thanks, in large part, to David Yeager, who was the lead scientist on the largest growth mindset experiments to date. As a new mom, do we have the best intentions? Yes. Do we have the best mindset, the best skills? No. Maybe it's a learning or a mentor opportunity that we have to maybe get somebody on the right path. You almost have to have this growth mindset to be part of a group of 50 people who are willing to sacrifice their bodies, to go fight every week, but I'm willing to for this greater good. People who became successful, what were the steps that they took? What did they do? Growth mindset is a very valuable skill to adapt and change as the labor market and as the economy is changing. This class is for everyone because mindsets apply to students, workers, athletes. Their teachers, their coaches have to learn how to create cultures or environments where their people can thrive. We were born to grow. When you look at babies the first few years, they take on challenging tasks constantly. And they take on the ones that are just right for them at every moment. That's how we were born, and we still have that in us. But by living in our culture, by absorbing, by seeing judgments taking place around us and so forth, we build a belief side by side with the growth that says, to be loved, to be successful, we hav...
