[CROWD CHATTERING] [CROWD ROARS] [MUSIC PLAYING] JESSIE KREBS: The wilderness has everything we need to exist, or we wouldn't be here. A lot of humans have come before us. And they've made it this far, and so can we. I'm a former Air Force SERE instructor, which stands for Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape. We teach our soldiers how to get back home if they come down behind enemy lines. [MUSIC PLAYING] Nature tests our willpower. If I can see that it is not something to dominate and control, if I can connect to it and everything that it offers, I can trust it has everything I need to survive. [MUSIC PLAYING] Over my 30 years or so of teaching these skills in the wilderness, this is really the most consolidated version I've done of these skills. And many of the skills you're going to see me doing here I've never done anywhere else on camera. So this will be the first opportunity to really see them in person and hopefully glean from them a little knowledge that you can take with you. During this class, we're going to be talking about what to do before you leave on a trip, how you should be thinking about things before you enter into the wilderness, and then the core of the class is going to revolve around the five basic needs of a survivor-- signaling, how to signal for help, personal protection, how to modify your clothes for cold environments, how to build an emergency shelter, and how to start a fire, sustenance, how to ration food and disinfect water, navigation, how to understand where you are and basic scouting techniques. And lastly, things about health-- how to take care of that mental capacity, right, how we're going to keep our emotions and our mind in check, and a little bit about hygiene, so how to just keep yourself clean out there, which is also part of the mental part, right? So if I keep clean, I'm feeling healthy, and stronger, and better about myself. We'll go into how to use a few essential tools like knives and rope, a compass, and a map, and then we're going to make a survival kit that you can take with you in any environment. Wherever you're going, it's always nice to have a few essentials with you to meet those basic needs. I think the thing you'll learn in this class is the most valuable is that you're more capable than you thought you were. And actually, you can do it. You've got this. You can survive. The wilderness is not out to get you. She's not this-- this creature that's hovering and just waiting for opportunity to pounce, right? That's not what the wilderness is doing. She really most the time, I couldn't say could care less, but we're just a little dot down here, right, doing our thing. And so we don't need to have that fear element or this element of I need to dominate and-- and know these hard skills and push through the pain and this kind of thing. No, actually chill out, and just make yourself more comfortable. And if we relax that ...
