NICOLE PERLROTH: In 2017, a cybersecurity firm called Darktrace reported a hack at a Vegas casino. The casino had state-of-the-art cybersecurity-- we're talking antivirus software, firewalls, the works. But when hackers want to find a way in, they can be very resourceful. This casino had one very unique feature-- a fish tank, one that could be remotely controlled over the internet to check on water temperature and salinity and even automate fish feedings over Wi-Fi. The hackers broke into the network through the tank's thermometer, and from there, they made their way to the casino's high roller network, some of the most sensitive data a casino holds. The theft was over in minutes. No masks, no break-ins, just one weak password. CHRIS KREBS: As we've rolled out the internet globally, there are thousands of cables connecting all the continents, and there are new cables being laid down every single day. And if you can visualize it, you can just see the data zipping between continents. That enables us to communicate with friends and family, business partners all over the world, but it also allows anyone with a computer or even just a cell phone anywhere in the world to reach out and touch you. Americans have this idea that we still live on an island protected by two vast oceans. And the reality is that on the internet, those oceans don't exist. Hackers are milliseconds away. And unfortunately, in too many cases, they're already inside our most critical systems, waiting for a rainy day. Sleeper cells. It feels like it's a world away and that I'm not a part of this. But what we're finding is that every day, more and more aspects of our lives are being targeted by the bad guys. You have to think about every smart device in your home as a potential entry point for hackers into those systems, into your most personal life. When our phones or our home networks can be used as platforms to attack businesses or even our nation in cyberspace, we have a responsibility to secure them better. In this class, you'll learn how to develop your own personal threat model and how to protect yourself given that new understanding. And lastly, you'll come away with an understanding that all aspects of global conflict begin in the digital space. I'm Paul M. Nakasone.
