What Is Micellar Water?

Micellar water is a skincare product that removes makeup and gently cleanses delicate skin. It consists of purified water, hydrating ingredients (like glycerin), and mild surfactants that form microscopic micelles—molecules that attract and remove dirt and oil from your skin. Micellar water is a gentle way to tone your skin and remove makeup; it washes away impurities and doesn’t sting like some toners.

How to Use Micellar Water

Micellar water is a quick and easy way to get clean skin. Here’s how to use the product:

  1. 1. Moisten a cotton pad with micellar water. Pour micellar water onto a makeup remover pad, cotton ball, makeup wipe, or gentle washcloth.
  2. 2. Gently wipe the moist pad across your face. Move the pad across your skin to remove makeup, dirt, grime, or sweat. For eye makeup and waterproof mascara, gently press the pad into the skin for a few seconds to help the process. (You may need to use additional pads, depending on the size of the pad and the amount of makeup or buildup on your skin.)
  3. 3. Dry with a clean towel or use another face wash. You can wrap up the cleansing portion of your skincare routine with the micellar water and dry your face with an unused towel, or you can use micellar water as part of a double-cleanse routine. To do this, follow up your micellar cleanse with your facial cleanser of choice, such as a foaming solution or milky cleanser. Finish off with a lotion or other moisturizer.

6 Benefits of Micellar Water

Micellar water first gained popularity in France. Here are some benefits of the multipurpose cleanser:

  1. 1. Cleans skin: Micellar cleansing water is an effective, dermatologist-approved product for ridding your skin of face makeup, dirt, sweat, grime, excess oil, and other impurities, leaving your skin feeling clean and clear.
  2. 2. Clears pores: The micelles in micellar water not only remove dirt at the skin’s surface, but they can go deeper to help remove dead skin cells from your pores. This prevents blockages that can lead to acne and breakouts, allows your skin to produce sebum (a natural moisturizer), and can produce a brightening effect by clearing the skin barrier of flaky cells.
  3. 3. Mild enough for all skin types: Micellar water has a mild formulation that works well for all skin types, from dry skin to acne-prone, oily skin, and for those with skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, or rosacea. Its combination of cleansing ingredients and hydrating ingredients doesn’t strip your skin of necessary moisture or cause irritation. If you have sensitive skin or irritated skin, the best micellar water to add to your skincare routine is one without fragrance or perfumes since manufacturers may add harsh chemicals to these formulas.
  4. 4. No rinsing needed: A unique advantage of micellar water is that, unlike other cleansers, you don’t need to rinse it off of your face.
  5. 5. Refreshes and cleans makeup brushes: Micellar water also removes beauty products from your makeup brushes. To use micellar water to clean your brushes, soak the brushes in micellar solution for five minutes, then rinse and dry.
  6. 6. Removes waterproof makeup: While tap water works as a makeup remover on regular makeup, waterproof makeup like mascara and eyeliner can be difficult to remove. Micellar water serves as a waterproof eye makeup remover that helps you avoid harsh rubbing on the delicate skin around your eyes.
