Can Dogs Eat Butter? Why You Shouldn’t Feed Your Dog Butter

Although it’s generally safe for dogs to have a small amount of butter, it’s not a good idea to include butter as a regular part of your dog’s diet. Small quantities of butter will not hurt your dog, but large quantities are bad for your dog’s health and can cause long-lasting health problems. Do not include butter as a part of your dog’s diet either by mixing it in dog food or feeding your dog food cooked in butter. (Peanut butter, however, can be a healthy supplement to a dog’s diet.)

Dogs can experience a range of health problems if they consume significant amounts of butter.

1. 1. Upset stomach: Many dogs are lactose intolerant, which means that they do not possess the enzyme needed to digest dairy products. Consuming large amounts of butter can be hard on your dog’s digestive system and may lead to diarrhea, bloating, and stomach cramps.
2. 2. Obesity: Fatty foods like butter can raise cholesterol and cause obesity, threatening your dog’s life and wellbeing.
3. 3. Choking hazard: If your dog gets their paws on an entire stick of butter, it may be a choking hazard, especially if the butter is wrapped. The butter wrapper, if eaten, can lead to intestinal blockage and severe stomach pain.
4. 4. Pancreatitis: The fat found in butter can also cause inflammation of the pancreas. The pancreas produces insulin and digestive enzymes, and a weakened pancreas can lead to life-threatening pancreatitis.
5. 5. Poisoning: Some kinds of butter have artificial sweeteners and preservatives, which may contain traces of xylitol, a toxic compound that can send your dog to the emergency room.

If your dog accidentally eats a bit of butter, there’s no need to rush to the vet, but do keep an eye out and monitor for these symptoms:

1. 1. Loose stools: If butter does not agree with your dog’s stomach, it may cause gastrointestinal distress and diarrhea.
2. 2. Vomiting or loss of appetite: These two symptoms, along with abdominal pain, may indicate pancreatitis, which is treatable with medicine but should be brought to your veterinarian’s attention as soon as you notice a change in your dog’s wellbeing.
3. 3. Weight gain: If your dog eats a lot of butter or margarine, he may gain weight and become lethargic, which can be symptoms of high cholesterol and heart complications.
