What Is Salami?
Salami is the general term given to different types of cured sausages that come from Italy. Common types of salami include Genoa salami, pepperoni, and soppressata. Salami is a type of processed meat that contains large quantities of seasonings, sodium, preservatives, and additives. These ingredients help extend the shelf life of salami and pose no serious threat to human health. However, they can pose multiple health risks to dogs.
Is Salami Bad for Dogs?
The short answer is yes, salami is unsafe for dogs to eat. A single slice of salami is unlikely to cause problems, but a lot of salami can be detrimental to your dog’s health. The high amount of salt in salami is linked to a number of health problems, such as heart disease, high blood pressure, obesity, and pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas). If your dog eats a large amount of salami, they run the risk of getting salt poisoning (aka sodium toxicity), which can lead to serious health issues, including kidney damage. Salty types of meat are also likely to make your dog thirstier, leading to more frequent urination.
Your dog’s stomach is not able to digest certain seasonings found in salami, such as onion and garlic powder. These seasonings are toxic to dogs and will likely cause abdominal pain and damage to their digestive system. If your dog eats large quantities of salami, they’re likely to experience painful side effects such as diarrhea and vomiting.
Should You Feed Salami to Your Dogs?
No matter the dog breed, whether you’ve got a small dog or a big one, you should not feed salami to your dog. It can be toxic, lead to excessive weight gain, and pose multiple health risks if eaten in large quantities. Instead of sharing human food with your dog, keep some healthy dog treats on hand that are safe and wholesome. If your dog eats a couple of salami slices, keep an eye on them and watch for any side effects. Call your veterinarian if their side effects are severe.
