What Are Yoga Sex Positions?

Yoga sex positions are yoga poses you can incorporate in the bedroom for sexual intercourse. Yoga is an Indian meditation practice that can help with flexibility, strength, stamina, and mindfulness for more comfortable, present, and holistic sexual experiences.

How Can Yoga Impact Your Sex Life?

Whether you practice yoga in a public yoga class or in your bedroom, the practice presents several major benefits for your sex life. A regular yoga practice can help you:

  • Develop strength and stamina: As you get into more challenging yoga poses, you’ll begin to develop your muscles to support your body and its stretches. This practice increases your muscle strength and stamina, allowing you to hold difficult poses for longer amounts of time—an ability that carries naturally into the bedroom.
  • Increase flexibility: Most yoga poses aim to stretch your muscles, allowing you to engage in deeper stretches even outside of practice. In the bedroom, deeper flexibility can help you explore new positions (including yoga-inspired positions) and to feel more comfortable in every position you choose to use.
  • Practice mindful sex: Yoga is a series of poses as well as a meditation practice that aims for mindfulness and awareness of the present moment. The mindful meditation of yoga (including mindful deep breathing) can help you feel more present and embodied during sexual experiences. This could enable you to be more in touch with your body and its pleasure centers for better sex.
  • Stimulate blood flow: If you practice yoga immediately before or during sexual activity, the movement and postures can help stimulate blood flow throughout your body (including to your genital region), increasing arousal, lubrication, and pleasure.

8 Yoga Poses as Sex Positions

Here are a few yoga sex positions you can incorporate in the bedroom:

  1. 1. Bridge pose: In bridge pose, one partner (usually the receiving partner) lies on the bed on their back with their legs bent and their feet planted on the bed about hip width apart. Then they press into the bed to raise their glutes and hips up into a hip thrust. Another partner can kneel between their legs and penetrate or stimulate their genital area. Bridge pose increases blood flow to the genital area and pelvic floor muscles for increased arousal.
  2. 2. Child’s pose: One of the most relaxed yoga positions, child’s pose can be a great pose for anal penetration because it opens up the anal muscles. To get into child’s pose, one partner begins on their knees with their back straight, then eases their weight backward until they’re sitting on their heels and their hands are stretched out in front of them. A penetrative partner can kneel behind them and stimulate or penetrate the anus.
  3. 3. Cat and cow poses: Two closely related yoga poses that allow for a yoga-informed approach to doggy-style sex are the cat pose and cow pose. To experiment with these poses, one partner starts on their hands and knees with their back flat. For cow pose, they raise their head toward the sky and let their back curve down toward the ground; for cat pose, they lower their head toward the ground and let their back arch toward the sky. Another partner may penetrate or stimulate from behind. This cat-cow stretch enables you to control the angle and depth of penetration.
  4. 4. Cobra pose: For cobra pose, one partner lies flat on their stomach, then plants their hands under their shoulders and presses until their upper body is upright. From here, they can slightly separate their legs to allow for a partner to penetrate or stimulate them from behind. For those with vaginas and G-spots, cobra pose can offer better access and stimulation as a rear-entry position.
  5. 5. Downward-facing dog: A classic yoga position that allows for penetration or stimulation from behind is downward dog—another variation on doggy-style sex. To get into downward-facing dog, one partner begins in a tabletop position and then lifts their hips until they’re in an upside-down V shape with their feet hip-width apart. A second partner can penetrate or stimulate from behind.
  6. 6. Happy baby: This is a simple yoga pose that can offer a variation on missionary position. For happy baby position, one partner lies on their back with their legs spread open in the air, their knees bent, and their hands holding their ankles, feet, or big toes. Another partner can kneel or sit between their legs for penetration or stimulation or can lie down and perform oral sex.
  7. 7. Plow pose: One of the more challenging yoga poses, plow pose can allow for especially deep penetration. To get into plow pose, the receiving partner lies on their back with their legs straight and pointing toward the ceiling. Then they lift their hips to bring their legs up over their head (perpendicular to the bed). This pose offers better access to the genital area, so a second partner can kneel and penetrate or stimulate their genitals. Plow pose puts some strain on your neck, upper back, tailbone, and lower back, so avoid trying it unless you feel comfortable and confident in your flexibility in these areas.
  8. 8. Savasana: Corpse pose, or savasana, is an end-of-practice, cooldown pose that yoga practitioners use to relax, meditate, and give their muscles a break. To get into savasana, one partner lies flat on their back with their legs slightly spread, and the other partner may penetrate or stimulate them by sitting beside or straddling them. This is an especially good position for relaxed, mindful sex and wellness.

How to Do Yoga Safely and Avoid Injury

Proper form and technique are essential to ensure the safety and effectiveness of a yoga practice. If you have a previous or pre-existing health condition, consult your physician before practicing yoga. Postures may be modified based on your individual needs.
