What Is Whipped Coffee?

Whipped coffee, also known as dalgona coffee, is a coffee beverage made by whipping instant coffee, sugar, and hot water to a frothy consistency and then pouring the whipped coffee over hot or cold milk. The foamy texture is similar to a latte, and cold whipped coffee is like a frappé, an iced coffee drink from Greece. You can flavor whipped coffee with add-ons like vanilla extract, cocoa powder, and cinnamon.

Origins of Whipped Coffee

Whipped coffee comes from India and Pakistan, where it’s known as phitti hui or beaten coffee. You can make beaten coffee in the same manner as whipped coffee, except you pour the warm milk on top of the whipped coffee, rather than the other way around. The name dalgona coffee was coined by South Korean actor Jung Il-woo, who tried the whipped coffee drink in Macau and likened it to dalgona, the Korean word for honeycomb toffee.
