The chief information officer (CIO) is the most senior person at a company or business in charge of information technology. The CIO is an executive position and is therefore involved with business processes and strategy as they relate to technology. While IT directors or CTOs may be involved with nitty-gritty day-to-day tech operations, CIOs are responsible for integrating their tech processes with a business’s overall strategy and vision.

A company’s CIO implements the business’ technology strategy in conjunction with the other C-suite executives like the chief executive officer and chief operating officer. They also determine how a company will use information systems, such as cybersecurity and administrative software. An effective CIO also communicates at an executive level between the IT department and the rest of the company.

What Are the Responsibilities of a CIO?

A company’s CIO is the senior-most member of its tech team. They are responsible for a series of top-level strategic decisions that can impact the path and success of a company. At the same time, they manage an entire department and function as the face of the company’s tech team. Here are some of the core responsibilities for the CIO of a business.

  • Manages the IT Department: All of the employees in the IT department are under the CIO. The IT director and CTO (Chief Technology Officer) may report to or work closely with them. They are responsible for managing the top-line efficiency of the entire department.
  • Works with a company’s C-suite: A company’s CIO communicates with the rest of the executive board to make sure that their tech strategy always aligns with the company’s overall vision and success trajectory.
  • Plans a company’s IT policies and strategy: A company’s CIO is the last word when it comes to its tech strategy and decisions. They are responsible for implementing a business’s overall tech strategy, which can greatly impact the success of the entire operation. Internally, they establish a business’s unique IT policies and standards, making sure that these stay up-to-date as the greater tech world evolves. They also plan a company’s information risk management processes to keep the company as secure as possible.

5 Requirements to Become a CIO

CIO is a high-level position that requires a breadth of experience in IT systems, as well as great people skills. Here are some of the hard and soft skills you should have if you’re one of the IT professionals who is interested in pursuing a CIO job.

  1. 1. Education: Strong CIO candidates may have a bachelor's degree or higher degree in computer science, IT systems, or software engineering.
  2. 2. Tech experience: A qualified CIO should have a breadth of experience in working with computer systems. This is a high-level position that often requires at least eight years of experience working in the field, with at least three years in an executive or strategic planning role.
  3. 3. Knowledge of the tech landscape: CIOs should be up-to-date and knowledgeable about current and future technologies that can give the company a competitive advantage.
  4. 4. Business sense: People who want to become a CIO should understand how the many departments of a company work in lockstep, from human resources, to budgeting, and business administration. It is their job to liaise between departments, which requires business acumen as well as project management skills.
  5. 5. Management skills: CIOs should have exemplary communication and leadership skills. The entire IT department often reports to the CIO if a company has one, and therefore the ability to manage and lead an entire team is crucial.

What Is the Difference Between a CIO and CTO?

A company’s chief technology officer (CTO) is similar to a CIO. In general, a CIO is responsible for the company’s overall strategy with information technologies, and a CTO is responsible for nitty-gritty IT operations. The CTO may also be in charge of finding new technologies for the company to use, while the CIO is more involved in implementing the information strategy that those new technologies will help deliver.
