What Is Tonkatsu Sauce?
Tonkatsu sauce is a Worcestershire sauce-like condiment typically served with tonkatsu in Japan. It's also served with other fried foods such as fried chicken, chicken katsu, korokke (croquettes), and okonomiyaki (savory pancake). Commercial Japanese-style tonkatsu sauce has some of the same ingredients found in ketchup, barbecue sauce, and other umami-rich dipping sauces; these include sugar, high fructose corn syrup, vinegar, apple, salt, tomato, cornstarch, prune, carrot, onion, and spices.
