What Is Toasted Coconut?

Toasted coconut consists of fresh coconut flakes or shredded coconut that you have cooked on the stovetop or in the oven until they become golden brown and crispy. Toasted coconut flakes have a crunchy exterior but a chewy consistency overall and a nutty flavor. Coconut meat’s nutritional profile includes carbohydrates, fat, and potassium; the ingredient contains little calcium, cholesterol, and protein.

To store toasted coconut, keep it at room temperature in an airtight container or a sealed ziplock bag with as little air inside as possible.

3 Ways to Toast Coconut

To make a big batch of toasted, flaked coconut, you can use unsweetened coconut or sweetened coconut, although the latter takes less time (and pairs well with dessert recipes). Here are three methods you can try:

  1. 1. Microwave method: On a large, microwave-safe plate, spread coconut flakes in an even layer. Microwave the coconut for a total time of four minutes, stopping the microwave in sixty-second increments to toss the coconut. If the coconut is not completely toasted after four minutes, continue to microwave and stir in thirty-second increments until the coconut is evenly golden brown.
  2. 2. Oven method: Preheat the oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit. Line a sheet pan with parchment paper or use a silicone baking mat. Spread the flaked coconut into a single layer as a thin layer will help the coconut to toast evenly. Cook for five to ten minutes, keeping a close eye on the coconut to prevent burning. Stir the coconut every couple of minutes.
  3. 3. Stovetop method: Place the coconut in a large skillet on the stove over medium-low heat. Let the coconut sit in the pan for about thirty seconds, then stir. Repeat the process until the coconut is golden brown.

5 Uses for Toasted Coconut

You can add toasted coconut flakes to dessert recipes, breakfast recipes, and even savory dinner recipes. Here are just five ways to use toasted coconut:

  1. 1. Coconut cake: A dessert of vanilla cake, sweet buttercream, and toasted coconut, a coconut cake uses toasted coconut on the exterior as well as between the layers of the cake. This cake is a classic coconut recipe that you can also adapt to cupcakes.
  2. 2. Coconut cream pie: Toasted coconut adds crunch to a flaky pie crust and a creamy custard. For a coconut cream pie, mix toasted coconut in with the custard, the pie crust, or both. Then top the finished pie with sweetened whipped cream and even more toasted coconut.
  3. 3. Granola: On a baking sheet, mix together oats, nuts, and seeds, then toast all the ingredients together. Mix in toasted coconut just before storing the granola in a sealed jar. You can serve your granola with yogurt or use it atop smoothie bowls.
  4. 4. Ice cream sundae: Scoop ice cream into a bowl and top it with chocolate sauce, peanut butter sauce, or caramel sauce. Then garnish the dessert with sprinkles, nuts, toasted coconut, and sweetened whipped cream.
  5. 5. Thai coconut rice: Coconut recipes are abundant in Thai cuisine, and toasted coconut rice is a popular dish. Cook the rice in coconut milk, then top the rice with toasted coconut right before you serve it.
