What Is Sweet Potato Pie?

Sweet potato pie is a classic dessert consisting of mashed sweet potatoes (or yams, its close relative) baked in a pie crust. Sweet potatoes are nutritious (they contain vitamin A, vitamin C, and potassium), naturally creamy, and sweet—making them easy to turn into a pie filling.

The standard sweet potato pie recipe is easily customizable. You can try various sweeteners, like light or dark brown sugar or molasses; add a pecan topping or flavored crust; or use a combination of eggs and whole milk, heavy cream, or evaporated milk to achieve the perfect creamy consistency.

What Is Pumpkin Pie?

Pumpkin pie is a traditional dessert featuring a spiced pumpkin custard filling and flaky pie crust. You can serve pumpkin pie chilled or at room temperature with a dollop of whipped cream during the fall or winter when pumpkins and gourds are in season in the United States.

The classic pumpkin pie recipe has many variations, including sweet potato pie and butternut squash pie.

3 Differences Between Sweet Potato Pie and Pumpkin Pie

Sweet potato and pumpkin pies are two seasonal desserts that share many commonalities, like sweeteners, toppings, and crust flavoring. However, the desserts have a few distinguishing characteristics, including:

  1. 1. Flavor: Sweet potato has a rich natural sweetness, while pumpkin is milder and best accented by traditional pumpkin pie spices, such as nutmeg, allspice, ground cinnamon, ginger, and cloves. Sweet potato pies may feature a lighter spice profile.
  2. 2. Texture: You can make pumpkin pie using fresh, roasted, puréed pumpkin or canned pumpkin purée—the secret ingredient to an extra velvety, dense texture. Chefs usually make sweet potato pie with fresh sweet potatoes to achieve a more rustic, airy texture.
  3. 3. Preparation: To make sweet potato pie, slice the sweet potatoes in half lengthwise and roast or steam until they become tender and creamy. Let the potatoes cool before peeling and puréeing them with assorted spices, sugar, large eggs, and heavy cream. To make classic pumpkin pie, combine canned pumpkin purée with the seasonings, dairy, sugar, and eggs and transfer the filling to a prepared pie shell. Bake until the center of either pie is set but still jiggles in the center.
