What Are Stuffed Mushrooms?
Stuffed mushrooms are a side dish consisting of hollowed-out mushroom caps stuffed with a savory filling and baked in an oven. Stuffed mushrooms are often served as a side dish or appetizer, particularly on holidays or at parties and BBQs.
You can make stuffed mushrooms with various edible mushrooms, such as shiitake, portobello, button, or cremini. Cheese is the most common filling for the side dish, followed closely by proteins like crabmeat or sausage or a mixture of veggies, cream cheese, and herbs.
3 Types of Fillings for Stuffed Mushrooms
You can choose from many different fillings for your stuffed mushrooms, including different types of meats. The cooking process will be very similar no matter the stuffing you choose, so experiment with different kinds to find your favorite.
- 1. Bacon: Fans of pork can try a crispy bacon stuffed mushroom. To make this filling, cook a few strips of bacon to the crispiness of your preference, then dice the strips and add them to a mixture of cream cheese and cheddar cheese and top with fresh parsley.
- 2. Crabmeat: A typical crab stuffing consists of shredded crabmeat with bread crumbs, herbs, garlic powder, cream cheese, and black pepper.
- 3. Italian sausage: Make a batch of sausage-stuffed mushrooms by combining cooked, chopped Italian sausage with parmesan cheese, minced garlic, and bread crumbs.

- 1
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
- 2
While the oven heats up, clean your mushrooms with a damp paper towel.
- 3
Prepare the mushrooms by pulling or cutting the stems off the cap, which should leave a shallow, hollowed-out indentation in the mushroom. Chop the stems into small chunks or use a food processor on a few quick bursts to cut them into large chunks. Place the mushroom caps on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet hollow side facing up.
- 4
Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add butter. Once it has melted, add the chopped mushroom stems and sauté for five minutes or until they have browned and most of the moisture has left the stems. Next, add the chopped garlic and bread crumbs to the skillet and cook for one minute or until the garlic is fragrant and the crumbs are lightly browned.
- 5
In a large mixing bowl, add the cooked mixture of stems, garlic, and bread crumbs along with the cream cheese, parmesan, and parsley. Mix to combine.
- 6
Spoon the mixture into the hollow portion of the mushrooms. Drizzle the stuffed mushrooms with olive oil and bake for 20 minutes, or until they turn golden brown.
- 7
Allow your stuffed mushrooms to cool for 5 minutes, then sprinkle them with salt and ground black pepper. Top the caps with spices like paprika or cayenne pepper, or garnish them with chopped green onions, bacon bits, or parsley.
