What Is a Strap-On?

A strap-on is a wearable dildo attached by a harness or vaginal plug for use during sexual intercourse. There are many types of strap-ons for different preferences, including strap-free, hollow, curved, and removable options. You can use strap-ons for masturbation, oral sex simulation, vaginal penetration, and anal penetration with a partner of any gender identity or sexual orientation. A strap-on dildo can penetrate and stimulate the cervix and g-spot—an area two to three inches inside the vaginal canal that, when stimulated, can lead to pleasure and sometimes orgasm. Strap-ons can also stimulate the prostate—a gland in the male reproductive system that produces the prostatic fluid that mixes with sperm to form ejaculate (or semen).

9 Types of Strap-On Dildos

There are many different categories of strap-on dildos, each designed to suit a different technique or elicit a specific sensation. Here are the most common types of strap-ons:

  1. 1. Briefs: Boxer-brief strap-ons feature a brief harness instead of straps and are designed for maximum comfort. For this strap-on type, the dildo is attached to a pair of boxer-brief underwear, which eliminates chafing—a common issue for wearers of traditional strap-ons that attach to the waist or thighs. Additionally, brief strap-ons are a great option for beginning peggers and penetrators because they don’t require constant adjustments, like other strap-ons.
  2. 2. Curved: A curved strap-on features a dildo with a slight, upward curve designed for the direct stimulation of the p-spot, or prostate gland, and the g-spot for vulva owners.
  3. 3. Double: Double strap-ons (also known as double dildos) typically feature two comparably-sized dildos designed for the simultaneous penetration of the wearer and the receiver. Double strap-ons can be used for vulva-to-vulva penetration or vulva-to-anal penetration.
  4. 4. Hollow: Penis owners can insert their members into a hollow strap-on for more extended sex sessions or additional girth. This strap-on type was initially designed as a solution for men with erectile dysfunction.
  5. 5. Pegging: Strap-ons for pegging, a sex act in which the penetrator uses a strap-on dildo to anally penetrate the receiver, come with their own practical style—a slimmer harness profile best suited for a thinner, curved dildo that can be more comfortable during anal play.
  6. 6. Removable: Some strap-on harnesses center around metal or plastic o-rings, making it easy to swap out dildos according to preference. Any dildo (or similar sex toy) with a flat base can be threaded through the ring and held in place.
  7. 7. Strapless: Instead of a harness, strapless strap-ons feature a standalone dildo with a vaginal plug on one end designed for double penetration—simultaneous penetration of the vagina and anus. These dildos can be used between two vulva owners or as a pegging device.
  8. 8. Unisex: Penis and vulva owners can use unisex adjustable harnesses, which come with adjustable straps and a crotchless design that fits around the legs and waist. This design allows a wearer’s penis or clitoris to be comfortable—and accessible—during use.
  9. 9. Vibrating: Vibrating strap-ons combine the appeal of vibrators and standalone dildos and come with a cord-attached remote that controls a small motor in the dildo shaft.

7 Tips for Using a Strap-On

As simple as they may appear, using a strap-on is not always an intuitive process. Here are some tips for first-time strap-on use:

  1. 1. Find the right fit. There are two components to consider when searching for the right strap-on: The harness and the dildo. A strap-on harness should fit snugly but not chafe or cut into the skin too much. Try harnesses on in a store, if possible, to help you choose the option that best suits your needs. When considering dildos, think about the materials you and your partner prefer, be it soft, flexible silicone or more textured material, like vinyl.
  2. 2. Sanitize. Like any sex toy, it’s important to keep strap-ons clean between uses to avoid introducing harmful bacteria into your or your partner’s body. Some harnesses are machine-washable, while others—like those made of leather—require hand-washing with warm water and soap. Always clean and sanitize dildos after use, either with a specially made sex toy cleaner or antibacterial hand soap.
  3. 3. Lubricate. Lube’s superpower lies in its ability to dispel friction and increase comfort, impacting strap-on play. Choose a lube that pairs well with the material of your chosen dildo. For example, avoid using silicone-based lube with a silicone-based dildo, as the former will break down the material.
  4. 4. Communicate with your partner. Communication is always paramount in a sexual relationship, but it becomes imperative during strap-on play. Discuss strap-on use before introducing it into your sex session. If you’re the wearer, it can be challenging to gauge intensity accurately, so listen to your partner’s feedback and needs.
  5. 5. Adjust the harness. Before using a strap-on dildo with a harness attachment, it’s a good idea to adjust the harness for better control of the dildo. If the harness is too loose, it will be challenging to do a smooth stroking motion, forcing you to stop and adjust, which can affect the mood of your sex session.
  6. 6. Start by straddling. To ease your way into the strap-on experience, begin with the wearer lying on their back. This position allows the penetrated partner can control the sensations and depth. Once you’re comfortable, you can use strap-ons in most sex positions.
  7. 7. Be patient. Learning to use a strap-on well takes practice—you’re wielding a new body part, essentially—so be patient with yourself if it’s your first time.
