What Are Sourdough Croutons?

Sourdough croutons are pieces of sourdough bread that are torn or cubed, then seasoned and rebaked or sauteed until crispy. Croutons are commonly used to add texture and flavor to salads, soups, and stews. You can make homemade croutons with any type of bread, as long as it is stale bread, but croutons made with sourdough bread taste slightly tangy.

3 Variations on Croutons

You can add a sprinkle of aromatics and herbs to boost the flavor of the croutons. Consider the following variations:

  1. 1. Garlic croutons: Add two grated garlic cloves to olive oil before coating the bread. If fresh garlic isn’t available, try sprinkling garlic powder over the tops of the croutons before baking.
  2. 2. Herbed croutons: You can use various dried or fresh herbs, like oregano, parsley, basil, and thyme. You can also mix in seasonings like Italian seasoning or onion powder. If using dried herbs or seasonings, sprinkle on before putting the croutons in the oven. For fresh chopped herbs, add after the first five minutes of baking.
  3. 3. Parmesan croutons: Sprinkle grated Parmesan cheese over the top of the croutons after the first five minutes of baking.
