What Is Sour Cream?
Sour cream is a fermented dairy product made of lactic acid bacteria and cream. This combination forms a chemical reaction, denaturing the whey proteins in the cream and thickening the liquid. Store-bought sour cream typically contains various preservatives, flavors, gelatin, and fillers. However, homemade sour cream only contains heavy cream and added bacteria.
This tangy dairy product makes a great addition to various baked goods, thanks to its creamy mouthfeel and pleasant acidity. Using sour cream instead of milk to make cakes, muffins, and bread will result in moister baked goods. Sour cream is a staple ingredient in Mexican cuisine, where you can enjoy it alongside nachos, burritos, tacos, and enchiladas.
What Is Greek Yogurt?
Greek yogurt is a type of Mediterranean dairy product produced by straining yogurt out of milk, then fermenting it into a thicker consistency. The straining process for Greek yogurt infuses it with almost twice the amount of protein contained in regular yogurt, keeping you fuller for longer. Plain Greek yogurt has a more sour taste than regular yogurt due to the fermentation and straining process. This strained yogurt does not contain liquid whey (the leftover remnants after milk is strained).
What Are the Differences Between Sour Cream and Greek Yogurt?
Sour cream and Greek yogurt are tangy dairy products with high nutritional contents. However, there are some differences between the two when it comes to health benefits.
- Fat content: Greek yogurt contains less total fat and calories per serving than sour cream. However, fat-free, low fat, and nonfat varieties of Greek yogurt and sour cream products are available at most grocery stores. Regardless, sour cream will almost always have more grams of fat per serving and a higher calorie count than Greek yogurt.
- Lactose content: Greek yogurt is lower in lactose than sour cream, making it a popular choice for lactose-free diets.
- Protein content: Greek yogurt contains more protein per serving than sour cream, which is ideal for those trying to build muscle or improve their immune system or bone strength.
- Vitamin content: Both Greek yogurt and sour cream contain vitamins and minerals essential for a healthy diet. While both products contain vitamin B12 and calcium, sour cream is higher in vitamin A, phosphorus, potassium, riboflavin, and selenium. Conversely, Greek yogurt has more potassium and probiotics.
Can You Substitute Greek Yogurt for Sour Cream?
Whether you want a low-fat alternative to sour cream or a richer dairy option than Greek yogurt, you can use these dairy products interchangeably. Both Greek yogurt and sour cream have somewhat sour, tart, and tangy tastes and creamy textures. When using Greek yogurt as a sour cream substitute, keep in mind that it has a slightly thicker consistency.
Greek yogurt and sour cream both work as condiments or toppings for baked potatoes, tacos, soups, and other appetizers. In baking, you can use Greek yogurt in place of sour cream to make banana bread or cheesecake.
Additionally, sour cream and Greek yogurt are some of the best substitutes for cottage cheese, crème fraîche, coconut milk, whole milk, cream cheese, or buttermilk in many recipes.
