What Are Sour Cream Cookies?
Sour cream cookies are a type of soft sugar cookie made with sour cream. Often made as holiday cookies or Christmas cookies, these iced or frosted confections have sprinkles on top. The cookie has a chewy texture and a sweet and sugary taste and is typically served with milk.

In a large mixing bowl, beat the unsalted butter with an electric mixer with a paddle attachment on medium-high for 30 seconds.

Add the sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt and beat on medium-high in the stand mixer until combined.

Add the sour cream, egg, and vanilla extract and beat again until combined. You can optionally add lemon zest in this step to make lemon cookies.

Slowly pour the flour into the mixture while it blends to combine.

Take the dough mixture out of the large bowl and divide it in half. Cover in plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for one to two hours.

On a floured surface, roll out one-half of the cookie dough until it is roughly ¼-inch thick. Use cookie cutters to cut out the dough.

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Place the cookies on a cookie sheet or baking sheet lined with parchment paper, spacing the cookies at least one inch apart. Bake for 8 minutes or until the edges are a very light golden brown.

Take the cookies out of the oven and place them on a wire rack to let them cool.

Spread the royal icing on the tops of the cooled cookies and allow the icing to dry. You can store your finished sour cream cookies in the refrigerator in an airtight container for many months, or store them at room temperature for one week.
