What Is Smoke Bomb Photography?
Smoke bomb photography is a form of photography that uses colorful smoke grenades to enliven any photograph. Smoke grenades, also known as smoke flares or smoke sticks, create plumes of smoke in different colors that can add drama and vibrancy to your pictures. Smoke bomb photos have become popular for brightening wedding photos and fashion shoots.
Types of Smoke Bombs for Photography
There are different types of color smoke bombs. They include:
- Bursts: Burst smoke bombs send colored smoke out of both ends, making them more difficult to hold as they burn. They also last half as long as regular smoke bombs because they produce twice as much smoke.
- Cool burning: Cool burning smoke bombs stay cooler than regular wire-pulls, making them the best smoke bomb to hold.
- Wire-pull: Ignite wire-pull smoke bombs by pulling a wire at the top of the can. When igniting a wire-pull bomb, angle the top of the can away from you.
How to Be Safe When Using Smoke Bombs for Photography
You should handle smoke bombs with care so you can remain safe. Follow these safety precautions when using smoke grenades in your photography:
- Check fireworks regulations. You can only use smoke bombs in some public spaces since they are pyrotechnic devices. Check the local fireworks regulations to see if you can legally use smoke bombs in your area.
- Hold from the cooler end. Smoke bombs heat up as they burn. If you're directing a model to hold the colored smoke bomb during a shoot, have them hold the canister near the bottom end of the bomb, which stays cooler than the top end, where the smoke comes out.
- Let smoke bombs cool before you dispose of them. Smoke cans can stay hot or heat up even after they no longer produce smoke. When disposing of your smoke bombs, place them somewhere safe to cool down, such as a metal bucket, before putting them in the trash.
- Watch out for ignition sparks. Smoke grenades emit sparks when you light them. Be careful when igniting the smoke grenade to ensure the sparks fly away from you. Also, avoid lighting your smoke grenade in an area with a lot of dry brush or any flammable materials that could catch a spark and ignite.
How to Shoot Smoke Bomb Photography: 5 Tips
Here are some photography tips for getting the most out of your smoke bomb photoshoot:
- 1. Find the right location. Find an area that will provide your smoke bomb photography with an interesting background with colors that complement your smoke grenades. Also, ensure you can legally shoot there and are not inconveniencing others.
- 2. Move slowly. If you have a model hold the smoke grenade, have them move it slowly to allow the smoke clouds to billow. Too much movement will thin the smoke trails out, creating less visually appealing shapes.
- 3. Play around with the lighting. Experiment with lighting to create a dynamic smoke bomb picture. For example, if you shoot at night, you can use directional light from behind to give your smoke clouds a haunting effect.
- 4. Set a fast shutter speed. Set your camera to a fast shutter speed for a sharp image. The faster the shutter speed, the crisper the detail you will see in your colored smoke clouds. Slower shutter speeds will create a blurrier image, and you will lose the detail of your colored smoke.
- 5. Take photos on a clear day. Use smoke grenades on a clear day without a lot of wind. A calm day will allow your smoke trails to billow in exciting shapes and make your smoke color pop.
