What Is an Air Mattress?

An air mattress is an inflatable bed meant for short-term use. Though some larger air mattresses work for home use when hosting guests, air mattresses designed for camping trips are smaller synthetic mats you can roll up for travel. When inflated, an air mattress provides a soft cushion for sleeping and keeps you off the cold ground when tarp or tent camping. Larger air mattresses can accommodate two people, and thick varieties inflate to over a foot high, though slimmer air pads inflate to only a few inches.

Manufacturers rate the insulation of sleepings pads and mattresses with the R-value scale. The higher the R-value rating, the warmer the pad or mattress. Most air mattresses have an R-value of between three and seven. You can find air mattresses that you can inflate with an electric air pump, hand pump, or foot pump, and some varieties have a tube you can blow into to inflate.

What Is a Sleeping Pad?

A sleeping pad is a slim mat used for resting in a tent or camping outdoors. Made of dense foam or soft synthetic materials, a sleeping pad provides a soft cushion between you and the ground. There are many sleeping pads, including closed-cell foam pads, ultralight sleeping pads ideal for longer backcountry backpacking trips, and inflatable sleeping pads that use air to create a light cushion similar to an air mattress. Due to the wide variety of sleeping pads, their R-value rating (a measure of warmth and insulation) ranges from one to seven.

When deciding between a sleeping pad and an air mattress, consider the following factors:

  1. 1. Comfort: A full-size air mattress or inflatable sleeping pad is more comfortable as the air provides more cushioning and keeps your body higher off the cold ground. Foam sleeping mats give you some cushion and insulation but may fail to provide enough support for light sleepers or side sleepers.
  2. 2. Durability: Both sleeping pads and air mattresses can be vulnerable to scratches, tears, and rips, but air mattresses are more prone to punctures. An air mattress with a puncture ceases to hold air; you can keep a repair kit on hand to patch up any holes to ensure you still get a good night’s sleep while camping, but a kit can take up a lot of space in your pack and adds extra weight. Foam pads are a more durable sleeping surface.
  3. 3. Insulation: Manufacturers measure the warmth and insulation of sleeping pads and air mattresses using R-values. A higher R-value indicates a higher thermal resistance, meaning the product can help prevent heat loss in cold weather. A full-size air mattress provides a high R-value rating due to the cushion of air and distance from the ground. A lighter foam pad earns a lower R-value, as the thin camping gear fails to retain your body heat as effectively. However, air mattresses, self-inflating pads, and foam pads exist in a wide range of temperature ratings for summer or winter camping, so research options based on your needs. Remember your sleeping bag also plays a significant role in how warm you will be at night.
  4. 4. Weight: A sleeping pad or inflatable sleeping mat is the smallest and lightest option for hikers on extended backpacking or mountaineering trips. Designed for ease of use and packability, you can roll foam sleeping pads tight and fit them in a stuff sack, and they add minimal weight and bulk to your pack. An inflatable air pad will require inflation and deflation but will be very light and portable, depending on your pack size. An air mattress or air bed is too large and heavy for long treks but can be a comfortable option for car campers.
