What Is a Singing Bowl?

A singing bowl is a type of bell made of quartz crystal, brass, or metal alloys that creates a soothing tone when hit with a leather or wooden mallet. Singing bowls, also known as Tibetan or Himalayan singing bowls, are popular in Tibet and Nepal. Striking the bowl produces a rich sound, and dragging the leather or wooden striker along the inner edge of the bowl creates overtones that sound like singing. Singing bowls complement meditative wellness practices, such as meditation and yoga, and can promote mental well-being.

What Does a Singing Bowl Do?

Singing bowls are popular instruments for meditation and sound healing practices. Some Nepalese and Tibetan Buddhist traditions incorporate singing bowls in meditation practices. Dragging a mallet around the bowl’s edge creates a sound bath or listening experience for meditation. The sound of striking the bowl and the resulting vibrations activate the parasympathetic nervous system and can offer stress relief and promote deep relaxation.

Sound therapy and Reiki chakra healing practitioners also use singing bowls in healing meditation practices to relax clients and align their energy points. In addition to boosting mental health, singing bowls' purported physical health benefits include chronic pain relief and healthy blood pressure. The physical healing claims of singing bowls are unsubstantiated.

How to Meditate Using a Singing Bowl

The beautiful sounds of a Tibetan bowl can complement your meditation or yoga session. Follow these steps for beginners:

  1. 1. Find the best singing bowl for you. Bowls and strikers come in various sizes and materials, so choose one that sounds and feels best to you. The sound of the crystal singing bowl or hand-hammered metal bowl should offer a harmonic experience for your meditation.
  2. 2. Strike the bowl. Get in a comfortable position, then strike the bowl with the striker.
  3. 3. Make the bowl sing. After striking the bowl, drag the striker around the inner edge of the bowl to extend the sound vibration.
  4. 4. Meditate. Close your eyes and experience the meditation bowl sound. Relax and enjoy its soothing, transportive sounds.
