8 Types of Sex Toys for Vulva Owners
Sex toys can boost solo masturbation sessions or bring added pleasure to partner sex. Here are eight sex toys designed for clitoral and vaginal stimulation:
- 1. Suction stimulators: Suction stimulators mimic the sensation of oral sex. These toys stimulate the clitoris with air pressure, pumps, and/or sonic waves, typically combined with gentle vibrations. Although suction stimulators offer clit stimulation, some people also find them pleasurable on the vaginal opening.
- 2. Wand vibrators: Wand vibrators typically have a long shaft attached to a bulbous, vibrating head. This device features a flexible attachment to the head so that you can angle, and buttons on the shaft control the intensity and vibration modes. Wand vibrators can be used directly on the clitoris or placed on the base of a dildo for added stimulation. You can also place the palm of your hand between your skin and the vibrator to gently massage different erogenous zones, such as the perineum. Wands can be corded or rechargeable.
- 3. Bullet vibrators: Bullet vibrators have a tapered end for direct clitoral stimulation or vaginal insertion. Bullet vibrators come in a variety of sizes, with some small enough to string on a necklace or insert into a hollow dildo, and typically feature a variety of different vibration patterns. Bullet vibrators shaped with an angled, flat top are known as lipstick vibrators since they look like a fresh tube of lipstick.
- 4. Rabbit vibrators: Rabbit vibrators are designed to stimulate the vulva both internally and externally. The internal part is a curved g-spot vibrator, and the outer part typically features two small prongs shaped like rabbit ears for clitoral stimulation.
- 5. Dildos: Dildos are phallic in shape and come in a wide range of sizes and styles. Vulva owners can use a dildo for masturbation or a strap-on dildo for penetrative partner sex. Some dildos feature a suction cup at the base to attach to a smooth surface for hands-free penetration, and others are designed to fit a bullet vibrator inside.
- 6. Double-ended vibrators: Double-ended vibrators offer dual stimulation for partner sex, particularly between two vulva owners. Typically, double-ended vibes are u-shaped and can be inserted into two partners at the same time. Some double-ended vibrators offer external stimulation on one end and internal stimulation on the other.
- 7. Butt plugs: Butt plugs typically have a conical shape with a tapered end that’s easy to insert into the anus. Vibrating butt plugs contain a small bullet vibrator and can be operated via remote control.
- 8. Anal beads: If you are new to anal toys, anal beads are good for beginners because they come in a variety of sizes that allow you to work up to a larger size. Anal beads are spheres—typically made with silicone, glass, or stainless steel—joined together along a cord, usually with a loop at the end for easy retrieval. Anal beads are designed to stimulate your nerves upon removal, so try to time the removal with your orgasm for added pleasure.
4 Tips for Using Sex Toys
Consider these tips for how to best clean and care for a sex toy.
- 1. Keep it clean. Clean your toys before using them for the first time and after each use. When sharing toys, place a condom on the toy and/or wash it carefully between uses. Always check the manufacturer’s instructions before cleaning your toys. You can use unscented soap and water, specialty toy cleaner, or even sex toy cleaning wipes. You can boil some silicone dildos, butt plugs, and other toys without motors to sanitize them. Elastomer toys can break down when exposed to high temperatures or harsh soap, so use colder water and mild soap or specialty toy cleaner.
- 2. Charge the batteries. If you have rechargeable toys, remember to charge them at least once a month to preserve battery life. A full charge typically takes at least two hours. For battery-powered toys, take the batteries out while not in use to prolong your toy’s life.
- 3. Use lube. Lubricant can prevent uncomfortable friction, making sensations more pleasurable. First, find out what type of lube is compatible with your toy. Many sex toys are made from silicone or elastomer, which should not be used with silicone-based lube. Instead, you’ll want a water-based lube. Glass and stainless steel toys, however, are fine to use with silicone-based lube. Apply a generous amount of lube to both your toy and the area of your body where you’ll be using the toy, and keep your lube nearby for reapplication.
- 4. Store safely. Keep sex toys in a cloth pouch or other breathable container to prevent bacterial growth. Keep each toy in its own pouch to avoid cross-contamination.
