9 Types of Sex Toys for Penis Owners
External and internal anal sex toys can elevate your solo masturbation session or bring foreplay and partnered sex to a new level. These nine types of toys are designed to add stimulation and sensation to your sex life.
- 1. Butt plugs: Butt plugs typically have a conical shape with a tapered end that’s easy to insert into the anus. Vibrating butt plugs contain a small bullet vibrator and are usually operated via remote control.
- 2. Prostate massagers: A prostate massager or stimulator has a curved shape designed to stimulate the prostate, also known as the p-spot. (Vibrators designed for vulva owners have a similar curved shape and can double as prostate toys.)
- 3. Anal beads: Anal beads are spheres—typically made with silicone, glass, or stainless steel—joined together along a cord, usually with a loop at the end for easy retrieval. Anal beads are designed to stimulate your nerves upon removal. For optimal use, try pulling them out right as you climax. For beginners, anal beads are a great introduction to anal play. Remember to apply a generous amount of lubrication before every use, and reapply regularly.
- 4. Masturbation sleeves: Also known as strokers, these textured tubes are made of stretchy, porous elastomer that wraps around the penis to simulate penetrative sex. Sleeves can be representational and resemble a vulva, or they can be nonrepresentational with an abstract tube or egg shape. Vibrating sleeves have a bullet vibrator enveloped in a soft elastomer sleeve. Although typically marketed as masturbation toys, contoured sleeves designed to feel like the vulva can be an add-on for a blow job.
- 5. Extenders: Extenders, also known as enhancers, are textured sleeves designed to be worn during partnered penetrative sex to add length and girth to the penis. Some sleeves cover the shaft only, and others are long enough to stimulate the scrotum and testicles.
- 6. Cock rings: Cock rings fit snugly around the base of the penis, keeping it hard. There are vibrating cock rings, rings with attachments for hands-free stimulation of a partner's clitoris during penetration, and even rings designed to be paired with a prostate massager for extra stimulation.
- 7. Dildos: Dildos are phallic in shape and come in a wide range of sizes and styles. Some dildos feature a suction cup at the base to attach to a smooth surface for hands-free penetration, and others are designed to fit a bullet vibrator inside. For targeted prostate stimulation, look for a curved dildo that is narrow enough to insert anally.
- 8. Wand vibrators: Wand vibrators typically have a long shaft attached to a bulbous, vibrating head. Wand vibrators can be placed on the base of a dildo or butt plug for added stimulation. If you want to vibrate the frenulum or shaft of your penis, use a wand vibrator with a silicone head attachment that loops around the penis. You can also place the palm of your hand between your skin and the vibrator to gently massage different erogenous zones, such as the perineum and testicles. Wands can be corded or rechargeable.
- 9. Penis pump: Penis pumps create an air- or water-based suction to temporarily increase blood flow and enlarge the penis. A penis pump consists of a hand or battery-operated pump, a plastic tube that fits over the penis, and a constrictive ring that sits at the base of the penis. Penis pumps can also be used to induce an erection.
4 Tips for Using Sex Toys
Consider these tips for how to best clean and care for a sex toy.
- 1. Keep it clean. Clean your toys before using them for the first time and after each use. When sharing toys, place a condom on the toy and/or wash it carefully in between uses. Always check the manufacturer’s instructions before cleaning your toys. You can use unscented soap and water, specialty toy cleaner, or even sex toy cleaning wipes. You can boil some silicone dildos, butt plugs, and other toys without motors to sanitize them. Elastomer toys can break down when exposed to high temperatures or harsh soap, so use colder water and mild soap or specialty toy cleaner.
- 2. Charge the batteries. If you have rechargeable toys, remember to charge them at least once a month to preserve battery life. A full charge typically takes at least two hours. For battery-powered toys, take the batteries out while not in use to prolong your toy’s life.
- 3. Use lube. Lubricant can prevent uncomfortable friction, making sensations more pleasurable. First, find out what type of lube is compatible with your toy. Many sex toys are made from silicone or elastomer, which should not be used with silicone-based lube. Instead, you’ll want a water-based lube. Glass and stainless steel toys, however, are fine to use with silicone-based lube. Apply a generous amount of lube to both your toy and the area of your body where you’ll be using the toy, and keep your lube nearby for reapplication.
- 4. Store safely. Keep sex toys in a cloth pouch or other breathable container to prevent bacterial growth. Keep each toy in its own pouch to avoid cross-contamination.
