Sense of Self Definition
Sense of self is the ability of human beings to perceive themselves, value their self-worth, and form a unique identity rich in varying attributes. A person’s sense of self connects to their self-awareness; those with a stronger sense of self have a solid grasp on their sense of identity, accepting their likes and dislikes and positive and negative personality traits.
Understanding personal identities and enacting personal values and interests can lead to a strong sense of self. Children and adolescents understand their self-identity through life chapters, events, and emotions. Over time and into adulthood, people continually develop and refine a healthy sense of self-discovery.
What Is the Importance of Sense of Self?
Having a sense of self is valuable in life because it can act as a north star, gut check, or road map in decision-making. People can have more control over their lives through self-reflection because they understand their needs, desires, and personal beliefs. A strong sense of self can also boost a person’s independence, self-confidence, and overall well-being.
Partners, friends, or family members can sometimes damage a person’s self-concept by pigeonholing them or telling them who they are, creating a negative feedback loop. People might behave a particular way to please others, affecting their self-esteem and mental health. Surround yourself with people who understand your sense of self so others can see and uplift your true self in all its complex and extraordinary humanity.
3 Signs of a Strong Sense of Self
There are a few ways to know whether you have a strong sense of self and value yourself:
- 1. You aren’t afraid to say no. If someone is a people pleaser, they might put others’ needs ahead of their own. Saying no can show you know your boundaries and respect yourself.
- 2. You know what you stand for. Having a solid sense of self means knowing your core values and beliefs. Throughout your life, these will act as motivators and guide your actions toward realizing your ideal self.
- 3. Others see you as you see yourself. If you think of yourself one way, but others see you differently, it might mean they have yet to accept your self-image—or you might not be as self-aware as you had thought.
How to Develop a Strong Sense of Self
To cultivate a stronger sense of self, consider the following:
- Build a support network. You can cultivate a stronger sense of self by showing your true self and surrounding yourself with a supportive network of family and friends who accept and love your genuine self. Selfhood is interactive in that how others see you influences how you see yourself, so it is best to associate with others who value you in the ways you love yourself.
- Keep a journal. Writing in a journal is an excellent way to identify patterns of thoughts and feelings. Journaling can help you identify your values and morals.
- Pursue your passions. Enacting your beliefs and pursuing your passions are ways to further develop your sense of self, which influences self-worth. If you participate in activities that uplift your spirits, you might be more likely to practice self-acceptance.
- Seek therapy. Therapy can also help fortify your self-awareness. Therapists can help you better understand your preferences, needs, and dreams, enabling you to comprehend who you are more clearly.
