What Is Self-Empowerment?
Self-empowerment is the act of making intentional, conscious efforts to take responsibility and reasonable control of your own life. This skill involves the ability to cultivate self-confidence and understand one’s own competency. Self-empowered people act from a sense of self-worth. When you feel self-empowered, you can identify the areas of your life where you need to make changes to achieve your goals.
Self-empowerment is more than positive thinking; it requires you understand your strengths and weaknesses and the situation around you. This way, you can know what steps to take for your own sake. This also means you believe you can carry out these plans. For example, if self-empowered people want a change in a system of governance, they do not wait around for things to improve. Instead, they set realistic goals and act on them. They may choose to organize other people, create local aid networks, inform and educate the public, and practice alternative means of leadership and community support.
How to Empower Yourself
Self-empowerment is an ongoing practice. Follow these steps to help you develop self-esteem, initiative, and other personal empowerment traits:
- 1. Recognize your abilities. Take account of your own abilities and power to change your circumstances. Analyze your strengths and weaknesses. Once you have a realistic understanding of them, take a moment to reflect on how they can help you accomplish your goals. A healthy sense of self-efficacy, or the belief that you have what it takes, is the first step in empowering yourself.
- 2. Increase your knowledge or abilities. After taking account of yourself and your situation, recognize where you can improve—whether that means you aim to gain more expertise in an area or get a better understanding of a topic. Self-love and self-appreciation can become easier as we challenge ourselves, add new skills, or learn about new perspectives.
- 3. Set goals. Ask yourself what you want to achieve once you have a clearer picture of your abilities and situation. Create an action plan—or a series of actionable steps—that move you toward your realistic goals.
- 4. Develop a strong community. The company you keep can make you feel more empowered. Seek friends and partners that share your values. Being in community with people who appreciate, affirm, and constructively challenge your contributions and ideas can give you the confidence to take control of your life.
- 5. Be assertive. Assertiveness means clearly communicating your thoughts and contributions. This can look like protecting your well-being and being honest about your needs. Decline requests for additional tasks or overtime that push you beyond your limits. Let someone know you respectfully disagree with them and be open to honest dialogue.
- 6. Practice self-care. Work on letting go of excessive negative thoughts. Make conscious decisions to take breaks from always striving for your goals. While continually striving to grow helps with personal development, it is also important to realize that you are enough just as you are. Being too results-oriented can make you feel disempowered.
