What Is Reminder Advertising?
Reminder advertising, also known as retentive advertising, aims to maintain brand awareness and encourage existing customers to make repeat purchases. With reminder advertising, companies take advantage of customers and potential customers familiar with the brand. There are many forms of reminder advertising, including email newsletters, display ads, and social media campaigns. The purpose of reminder advertisements is to get customers thinking about the brand, upping the likelihood of more purchases and boosting revenue for the company.
Reminder Advertising vs. Informative Advertising vs. Persuasive Advertising
Informative, persuasive, and reminder advertising incentivize customer purchases in different ways at various stages of the purchase process:
- 1. Informative advertising: Informative advertising aims to cultivate a new customer base by providing information about a new product or service. Brands craft informative ads to appeal to a target market of potential customers. These ads generally include information about the brand or a particular product or service.
- 2. Persuasive advertising: The goal of persuasive advertising is to convince consumers to make a purchase. This is a challenging type of advertising because it assumes people might not have a need or desire for the product or service. Advertisers must create the need or desire for potential consumers through persuasive ads, with the end goal of converting leads.
- 3. Reminder advertising: Companies use reminder advertising when the brand awareness of a product or service is already established. Reminder advertising targets consumers familiar with the brand. This type of advertising does not aim to change minds or provide new information.
5 Examples of Reminder Advertising
There are several different strategies marketers use for reminder advertising. Consider the following formats and examples of reminder advertising:
- 1. Abandoned cart emails: If customers consider a purchase and leave items in their virtual cart without checking out, many companies send follow-up reminders. These abandoned cart emails nudge customers in the consideration stage to make a purchase, reminding them about the items. Sometimes e-commerce sites will offer a special discount in reminder emails to incentivize a purchase.
- 2. Cross-platform content: Content marketing refers to everything from podcast episodes to social media posts. To increase brand awareness, companies creat various forms of content and share it widely so the brand appears in different places. Established brands maintain high visibility with reminder advertising on social media, billboards, commercials, and more.
- 3. Display advertising: These brief reminder ads appear in apps and websites, particularly retail sites. Display ads are often simple, showcasing the brand name, a tagline, and an image of the product. With display ads, companies aim to create more saturation of the logo, brand name, or product identity to keep the brand top-of-mind and to drive traffic to their site.
- 4. Email newsletters: Email marketing campaigns can be a great way to inform and remind a wide customer base about your products. By periodically sending out information about new deals and special offers, you can incentivize customers to make purchases. Companies also use email newsletters to inform customers when a product is going off the market to maximize sales before the product life cycle ends.
- 5. Retargeting: This form of reminder advertising targets potential customers based on their browsing history. Even if a potential customer does not make a purchase, viewing a product online can trigger ads across different social media platforms. These retargeting ads remind customers about the product. A company that brokers real estate deals or offers mortgages, may use reminder advertising to identify and appeal to first-time home buyers.
